GPL - I see the light!

by Joseph Marque » Mon, 22 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I never tried GPL bc my old 166 had the voodoo 2 and was too slow.  My
new 450 has a TNT so I thought I was out of luck until I realized there
is an open GL patch.  Well, I downloaded the demo and the open GL
patch.  WOW!  I've played N2, F1RS, Monaco Grand Prix Racing demo, TOCA
2 demo, and SCGT demo.  I thought Gran Turismo was the best feeling
racing sim on the market (even compared to PC sims).  I too am a PC
snob, but believe me Gran Turismo is excellent.   Now I understand why
GPL is in a class by itself.  Oh my God.  I *feel* the slightest extra
touch of gas shifting the weight back.  I *feel* the slightest tap of
the brakes bring the weight forward.  How the hell did papy do this?  It
truly is amazing.   I'm not a racing sim nut and I am certainly not that
great at sim racing.  My best lap after the first 30 minutes was only
1:22 on watkins using the realistic lotus (what a rocket with absolutely
no down force to hold you down).  My opinion is purely based on how
close it feels to really driving.  It is the best, period.  Nothing
approaches it.  I've never driven a race car.  I have driven go karts
and my Audi A6 faster than I should :-).   The basic feedback from a
street car is the shifting back on acceleration and forward on
braking.   I believe driving a race car will be similar to driving a
street car, just tighter, faster, and  more responsive.  I also believe
that for most of us driving fast on a winding road is the closest we
come to racing.  I look for a sim to give me that same experience just
at a much higher level.  I find GPL gives me the same feed back I get in
my own car, only much faster and more thrilling.  To the GPL critics,
either you don't have a good wheel or you don't know how to properly
drive.  With my TSW2 It is not that hard to turn laps.  If you are
loosing control every other lap you just do not know how to drive.  I am
certainly not very competitive at this point, but after about 30 minutes
of racing I can turn 1:30 laps time after time without losing control.
I'm sure getting down to real world times is extremely hard and can only
be achieved after hundreds of hours of practice.  However, if you know
how to drive and approach the track at your comfort level you can turn
consistent laps.  If you try to be too fast too soon, you will do poorly
and not enjoy this at all.  Just don't blame the sim,  the physics seems
modeled extremely well and the feedback is superb.  Bottom line, this is
a remarkable sim and now I know what all the hype is about.  WOW!

Wekcome to the club Jo. There is no going back now. I have to issue with a
warning here though.

DRIVING GPL ON VROC CAN HAVE SOME VERY *** SIDE EFFECTS.

1. Phone bills will begin to break the bank
2. Married men come under the threat of divorce
3. Getting up for work becomes increasingly difficult
4. Sanity is lost whilst trying to figure out how to break through the
firewall at work
5. You become a social leper with friends forgetting your name.

There are many other associated problems I could list but I need to go and
get my fix now. See ya in room 1 :-)

Jo, if you can feel the subtle differences if throttle position, your
halfway to being  competitive.
