3d Video cards & System speed ???

by Da » Thu, 25 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I have a question about 3d video cards and system speed.  I hope someone can
help.

Does the Mhz speed of a given system have any relation to how fast (or how at
all) the 3d video card operates.  For example, will a 3d video card operate
better or faster on a 200Mhz as opposed to a 133Mhz system.

I've herd that a 133Mhz system with a 4meg 3d video card will work fine on
most of the new sims that require 3d cards.  I also know that a 200Mhz system
is faster that 133Mhz, but what is the relationship between the system speed
and the 3d card. (if any)

Thanks

Dan

At first thought, I would think that in terms of the video card alone, it
would operate the same on a 133 as it would a 200 simply because the bus
speed is the same on both systems, 66mhz. Therefore the card is running at
that bus speed (don't confuse the bus speed with the SST_GRXCLK=57 setting).
But then, when I think about it, the processor speed helps alot of other
stuff, so overall, the game is going to look better on a 200 in my opinion.

A 3DFX the card operates as an individual, but PowerVR's performance
increase's with processor power.

I'll probably be proved wrong though :)

Dan,

It is true that adding a 3dfx card can take a marginal system (133 -
150mhz) and make it useable.  The faster the processor, the faster other
things happen like Disc Reads, etc ... so the faster processor will help
but isn't a requirement to see an improvement.  Make sense?\
