Buying my son a *** device for Christmas and need advice on
just what type of thing to use for mostly  road/track games like
NASCAR and others like Doom, etc.

Would a joystick do the trick and would it offer the most variety
of uses OR should we be thinking about some sort of game pad?
 ...which one?

Thanks.

Gamepads are useless for FPS (first person shooters) like Doom.  Mouse
and keyboard combo are best for those.  If those are the only kinds of
games he plays, you might check out a steering wheel and pedals.

Useless??? Hell boy gampads kick ass, especially the Xterminator. It has a
continuas motion pad for racing and flight sims and a throttle and a hat
switch  and two flippers. That would be the best value for him.

I said useless for FPSers.  I'm sure they do kick ass for other types of
games.  I haven't seen the Xterminator.  Does it compare to using a
mouse for looking around in FPSers?  If all he does is racing games and
FPSers, then a steering wheel might be the best.

Yeah it has a continuos motion pad it is like a joystick so you can fine
tune your movements and it rocks in racing sims because it acts like a
steering wheel.Take a look at it

It looks good.  I wouldn't use it for FPSers because it looks like you
wouldn't be able to run and aim at the same time unless you have 2
thumbs.  It'd be good for other games though.

A decent wheel (good, actually) at a reasonable price is the

Decent pedals (actually, superior to the TM Nascar Pro, a more expensive
wheel) and a well designed and built wheel unit.

If he is racing, forget joysticks.  Get him the wheel.
