Advice needed: Win95 and Racing Games

by Paul » Tue, 01 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Hello all,

I am still using DOS 6.2 to run system, but it is getting more and more
tempting to change to Win95 due to the available software for that
platform (both for business and games). I have installed Win95 in the
past, only to remove it because it seemed to slow things down and I
really didn't need it for any specific reason (I was also very familair
with the nuances of DOS).

Anyway, I primarily play GP2 and Nascar2, along with several other
games. Do you folks have anything good to say about the conversion to
Win95 and it's effect on playing these games? (I have a p120)

If so, are there any helpful websites on setting up Win95 for best
DOS-game-performance?

Thanks,

Paul

I still don't like the horse power from dos 7.0, you can run a
multi-boot and have the best of both worlds.

Install W95 of you wish, but just keep on playing racing games in DOS.
Especially on a P120, performance will definitely be better in DOS. It's
possible to keep your old DOS 6.2 when installing W95. If you choose to do
that, when booting W95, press F8 and you will be able to boot straight to
DOS 6.2.

I don't know about websites with tips about game performance in W95.

Paul,

I've found the best way to run DOS racing games after a win '95 install
is to edit the "exit to dos.pif" file (the quotation marks are necessary
if you locate the file with the win '95 finder feature).  In windows,
locate this file, right click on it and choose Properties.  Click on the
Program tab, then choose Advanced.  Elect to Specify a new configuration
for DOS, and put in all the device driver info you need to run the
game(s).  Once you've done this, save the file and use it in Windows 95
by clicking Start/Shutdown/Restart the Computer in MSDOS Mode from the
desktop.

God Bless,
Steve

Hello Paul

Even if you install WIN 95 you still have a full DOS available
(Unofficial DOS 7) and so you can reboot into MSDOS mode from
WIN 95 (Full DOS not DOS shell) and run all your DOS games.
Ulternatively you can boot directly into DOS and boot up time
by pressing the F8 key when the message "Windows 95 is
Starting) appears.  The only thing is you need to set up a
batch file to load you Mouse, Sound card and CD-rom drivers
for DOS for both methods. Personally I use Win 95 for
Internet, and businness software and use good ole DOS for
games.
The fact is you can have the best of both worlds, so might as
well take em. Let me know if ya want some help if you are
unsure about how to set up you WIN 95 machine for DOS.

My 2 cents: I don't have DOS on either my work or my home machine for almost
2 years now, since beta 495 of Windows 95, and I don't miss a thing. It is
only a matter of not letting the GUI boot, and then proceeding from the
command line (no, this ain't DOS 7, it is W95 command-line interface). It
works wonders with ANY DOS game I've thrown at it, and in fact, better that
DOS 6.2x. It is 'customizable', letting me choose from 4 different boot
configs, in order to load (or not) mouse drivers, SB drivers, CD-ROM,
whatever.
Drop me a line if interested in details.
