Sidewinder FF Wheel has always a bit of throttle

by Jan » Wed, 08 May 2002 18:05:57

Hi,

I am a huge fan of Colin McRae Rally 2, but I have a little problem
with my Sidewinder FF Wheel (USB). In CMR2, the throttle axis looks
like it is always half-through pressed, even if I do not touch the
pedals. This leads to the problem that I always have some throttle
(until end of 1st gear), even if i don't touch anything and that I
cannot drive reverse, because the brake DOES respond correctly,
however as to the system the throttle is always pressed a bit, I
cannot go into reverse mode with Automatic Transmission. Even the
handbrake doesn't help with this.
Unfortunately, this problem only persists in CMR2, not in many other
racing games I tried the wheel with.
In Game Controllers, the wheel behaves perfectly normal (on the test
tab, the car doesn't race on its own until i push the throttle).
Too bad there is no calibration screen in CMR2, as there is in GP3.
When I have CMR2 set up for two sperate axis, the brake axis status is
completely on the right and goes thorugh the middle to the left when i
press the brake. For the throttle, it is starting in the middle and
then goes tol the left.
I cannot find a way to set contarst and deadzone in a way to work
correctly.

Maybe someone can help me out here?

Thanks,
Jan

I am not sure this will help you but I had the same problem with NR2K2 when
I recently re-did my system and had to re-install my wheel. The problem was
that I did not have the Split axis setting checked within the wheel's
software. Once I set that the pedals worked fine.

I'm pretty sure this is a split-axis problem.  You need to create a
profile for CMR2 in the Sidewinder Profiler and configure the pedals
to use split-axis.  Then whenever you want to play CMR2, just start
the profile and then start the game.  Problem solved (hopefully).  I
have exactly the same problem with Gpl.  If I switch on my pc and
enter the game, as soon as I get in the car the engine starts reving
up as if the throttle is being pressed and I can't drive.  But if I
start my properly configured Gpl profile in the Sidewinder software
first I have no such problems.

I haven't used CM2 so I don't know how the controls are calibrated, but if
you can, dial in some deadzone at the start of the pedal travel of the
accelerator.  If you can set a small deadzone, then that should overcome the
gas always on.

Sidewinder FF Wheel has always a bit of throttle

Hi Andy,

that's what I thought, so I entered the profiler and created a
split-axis-profile for CMR2... UNfortunately, it didn't help... I have
Axis 0 (x-axis), Axis 1 (throttle) and axis 5 (brake) in CMR2. When
Brake is not pressed, the meter starts at the right of the scale.
Pressing the brake causes it to wander to the left. From right end to
middle to left end.
With the throttle, however, it is different: when depressed, the meter
already IS in the middle, NOT at the right end (as it is with my
friend's wheel). So, it looks as if the pedal is halfway through.
Strange thing is that in the settings for this USB wheel, everything's
fine (and in other games, too).

I also tried the non-split-axis way... There, i have only axis 0 and
axis 1. Guess where axis 1's meter is when the pedals are not pressed?
Correct, halfway between left end and middle...

sigh...

Sidewinder FF Wheel has always a bit of throttle

Hi Dave,

unfortunately, in CMR 2 it is only possible to change the deadzone
from the middle and then in both directions symmetrically. So you
cannot simply shift the deadzone to the right because you would also
shrink the steering/pedals to the left extent.

It's really a pain... and the manual doesn't really explain how the
contrast and deadzone settings work... Anyway, my problem seems a bit
unusual... I hope in CMR3 there will be a recalibration mode (push
pedals through, then press button etc..)
