GPL: Starting race in multiplayer

What are you supposed to do when practice ends until the race starts when in
MP mode? Should you hit esc-enter and return to the race screen to wait for
the starting countdown, or should you stay "in the car" in pit lane or
something. At a recent race I was at the race screen ready to go, but when
the countdown to the start began the green button wouldn't appear!

Press ESC then ENTER to goto the garage/chat screen.
