SBLive i assume...
Latest drivers (LiveDrvPack.exe 25,911,874 bytes) i assume

I'm having the same problem.

The only thing that seems to fix it is

...using keys for accelerating and braking... not really a solution :(

... changing
[ Engine ]
sampleRPM = 5200.000000                  ; recorded sample RPM
 to
[ Engine ]
sampleRPM = 7200.000000                  ; recorded sample RPM

also not really a solution.

sigh... its really pissing me off.

Try lowering the hardware acceleration. Worked for me.

Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > Audio > Sound Playback;
Advanced > Performance

somtehing like this:

Worked for me too, but the sound quallity isn't the same... and it
messed up the sound in some other games.

Luckily I had an onboard sound card which I now use for GPL, and SB
Live for other games. This involves changing the default wave device
every time I change to/from GPL, but it's easier than setting up a
dual boot system...

This has come up a few times recently. I assume you've got a SB live of some
sort?

With XP, the latest drivers cure the problem for some, but not all. Turning
the hardware acceleration down fixes it for some other people.

I had this problem with win2k & a SB Live 5.1. I had to completely disable
hardware acceleration to fix it.

bring you acceleration slider down to basic acceleration in you
sound/multimedia contol panel applet. GPL uses a software sound engine, you
will not suffer any performance hit. Keep a shortcut on the desktop as you
will want to slide that back to full acceleration for your other games...
