Last night, I downloaded and went to install the MM demo. Near
the end of the install, it brought up a dialogue box saying
something like "Midtown Madness requires DirectX 6.1 to run, and
DirectX 6.0 is detected on your system. Would you like to
download DirectX 6.1 now? [ok] [cancel]". I pressed Cancel--if
I'm going to upgrade, I prefer doing it myself over having a
program do it, and also, I had gotten a bad impression of
DirectX 6.1 (I can't remember what the problems were exactly,
just remember reading a lot of complaints about it in this
newsgroup, leaving me with a negative impression about it).
Well, after pressing Cancel, a warning box was brought up,
saying something to the effect of DirectX 3.0 or newer was
required to run this demo, please install DirectX and try again.
Well, I checked, and MM was installed. I tried running it, and
sure enough, the game ran just fine.
So, we have the inconsistent warning messages (one saying you
need DirectX 6.1, one saying just 3.0) and the fact that it runs
on DX 6.0. I guess it is just an MS way of getting you to
upgrade to the most recent DirectX. Anyway, if you don't have
DirectX 6.1, and want to try this demo, I'd say give it a try
running it first as opposed to clicking [ok] on the button to
upgrade to DX 6.1 at the time, because it may work fine.
BTW, video card is an old 12mb Voodoo2, if this matters.

Ah, this may be. Thanks.
