Athie T-Bird 950
512 MB PC133 RAM
Creative GF2 GTS 32MB (6.50 nVidia)
SB Live!

I'm running D3D - 640 x 480 x 16bit, and world detail slider all the way
left, all the lighting off, all cars seen ahead and behind (veyr little
frame rate hit, improves realism). I'm getting between 30-35 FPS. This is
certanly playabe, but not ideal. Anything I should try, to either get more
FPS or run mroe graphics?

TIA

The quickest way  is probably to limit the # of cars seen in the mirror to
just 3 or 4.
also limit what you can see in the distance...one nice feature of N4 is the
fact you can still see the pace car even if you are only showing 10 or 15
cars ahead of you.
Yeah it hurts realism but with your cpu and vid card you should be getting
better
frame-rates.  move the details slider somewhere near the middle, you
probably won't see much of a loss going to 800x600 and .....limit the amount
of sounds the game uses.
good luck

You should be doing a LOT better than this with this configuration...
Something is wrong.

Something is very wrong.. PIII866 here, GFII GTS and I run N4 with
medium details in 800x600 with 43 AI cars visible both front and
rear.. fps varies between 20-70, depending very heavily on what
happens on the screen.
Have you tried running N4 in OpenGL mode? Don't forget to turn off
V-sync in your GFII properties.

PIII 700
192 MB PC133 RAM
Elsa Gladiac GeForce2 GTS 32 MB DDR

Running in 1024x768x16 with World Detail at 75% and all the extras
turned on, showing 25 cars ahead, I get no less than 30-35 fps.  That
is my personal compromise between graphics detail and fluidity.  With
your system you should be able to do a lot better.  I would make sure
you have the latest video card drivers, and reduce the number of
sounds being played if possible.  Of course closing out all
unnecessary programs before you run NASCAR 4 will help if you're not
doing that already.

You might also want to go to Device Manager, look under Disk Drives
for your hard drive (probably Generic IDE Disk Type 47), right-click
on it and select Properties, go to the Settings tab, and make sure
that the DMA box is checked.  If your hard drive can run in UDMA 33
and and the box isn't checked, checking it could make a huge
difference.  If you have to check it, make sure to come back after the
reboot and see if the box is still checked.  If it is, you should
notice an improvement  right away.  If it isn't, your drive doesn't
support UDMA 33 or 66  and you might want to invest in a faster drive.

I just noticed that the 2nd hard drive listed did not have DMA checked
(I added the old drive the other day to my new system).  I checked it
and got a scary warning message.  The 1st drive (Maxtor 7200ROM) has
that box checked.  I am wondering if checking it will***up my
system.  The 2nd drive is an IBM 7200RPM Deckstar 12GB.
