I find the FF an irritation and distraction -- to me it doesn't add any
realism, and seriously impedes my lap times (in GPL). Am I doing
something wrong?

Maybe not. A few people just don't like FF. But.... 2 things might help.
First, give yourself time to get used to it. 2nd, try turning down the
Overall Device Gain. If you're not used to it, there's no need to keep it at
maximum. Most people find that when they are used to FF, it's hard to go
back to driving without it. Give it time.

Until you find the proper settings for your feel and style you will find
that your lap times will increase. Then there will be a new learning
curve to get your lap times back down. I have yet to achieve some of
the fastest laps I ran pre-FF. But the upside to FF is that my lap
times are almost as fast, but extremely more consistent. What really
sold me on FF was driving the Ring. Until FF I never understood why I
had such a difficult time with this track. It's alot more work to
wrestle with the wheel at the Ring with FF, but it's also alot more FUN!
I have the gains settings to 100% and the spring centering to 0% for
GPL. The following are my core.ini settings... Keep experimenting
until you find the right feel for you. You may want to start with
settings that don't provide alot of FF and as you adjust go back and
increase the feel some more.
force_feedback_latency = 0.001000
force_feedback_damping = 150.000000
max_steering_torque = 330.000000

Thanks -- those gentler settings helped a lot. Within an hour, I'd
improved my time at Kyalami (1:25.91 - yes, I know that's slow!). But
whereas before my 1:26's felt fast.. the 1:25's now feel slow -- so I
know I can do better.
Part of the problem is that FF is hitting my frame-rate quite badly.
I've turned off all detail, and it's not too bad now -- except when I
get cars in the mirrors, at which point the frame rate suffers and makes
it hard to keep the speed up.
Why Kyalami? It's the track I know best, having walked it several
times. The first major motor race I ever went to was the SAGP in 1968,
which of course featured the 1967 cars in GPL. Clark 1st, Hill 2nd.
Clark's last F1 race. This was a few days after my 11th birthday, for
which I was given an 8mm cine camera. Very sadly, the film I took that
day got lost in a house move a couple of years later. The first time I
fired up GPL it literally brought tears in my eyes, as one of the
replays had *exactly* the same camera angle and action as that long-lost
8mm film (Clark and Hill coming round Leeukop in formation, viewed from
the Leeukop grandstand).
(I missed 1969, but attended 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973... but more of that
another time...)
