Racing legends - Is the dream over ?

I used to be a believer...
I used to believe every single line the West-bro's wrote...
I used to dream of 'The Ultimate Simulation'...

That was a long time ago...
In a galaxy far, far away...

Suddenly 'Live 4 Speed' appeared...
Out of nowhere...
No hype, no 3DStudio Max screenshots, no avi's...
Just a demo that WORKED and that was great !

NO HYPE !
No merchandising,
no whining...

Then Netkar came...
Out of nowhere...
No hype... etc...

The first release was still modest (graphics-wise that is)
but IMHO it's becoming one of the greatest sims ever...

I don't believe in the RL-tale anymore...

And what's more : I don't care !

We have two upcoming sims that will be SUPERB once they reach the
'1.0'-level... (they ARE already great now)

And let us not forget 'Racer' (Ruud van Gaal) which is also doing great
(please Ruud, fix this one one day : I have a MS Sidewinder stick in my
joystick port and an usb MOMO - Racer doesn't recognize my wheel...)

Am I the only one who is seriously doubting the whole RL-story ?

I just had to let this go....

- Live for Speed: my TSW doesn't work properly in it and FPS are shaky
(compared to the sim I run on a regular basis: N2003).
- Netkar: can't say, the game loads but I can't go to a track, it says I'm
missing a .dll file...
- Racer: installed the latest version, the game starts. When I load a track,
the progress meter goes from left to right, then nothing else happens.
- I'm a dummy that still waits for the West to generate a sim.

Hmm...you must have a very sick and/or strange PC....

I'd have to say that my money is on Netkar at this point in time.  Very
early days, but it shows the most promise so far.  F1 2002 is still king of
physics & graphics engines but if ISI are going to neglect multiplayer then
it's time we started neglecting them...

Your PC is badly configured.

And I'm sure they will come round your house and install it for you too!
BTW, what colour Hyperstim would you like them to bring you?

Philster....its 'user error'..not the games.

Sort your pc out and then try.

And Windows 98 is no relation to Windows 95.  Windows XP?  That's an
entirely different OS than Windows 2000 or Windows NT.

RL == WSC.  Same shit, different wrapper.

Strange; I have an MSFF wheel (not a joystick though) in my gameport,
and can use a USB device next to that (for example the ActLabs
Performance Pedals).
One thing I've designed into the controller system is that it can just
about support anything (upto 10 controllers).

Might be your controller ordering to change; check the order in your
Control Panel -> Game Controllers screen. If the MS Sidewinder is at
the 2nd spot, you should modify the control set file you're using to
use something like:

controllers
{
; How many controllers to use from this list?
  count=1
  ; Define all controllers
  controller0
  {
    ; Main controller
; Index in the list of game controllers
    index=1
  }

instead of index=0.

Anyway, I'm very close to getting most of that dreaded control setup
in a control setup screen. Most of it is working, but how to assign a
mouse axis to a control? :) Hmmm.
But that should deal with all that *** control set file stuff.

It will then also support trackIR (www.trackir.com); a nice little
gadget to track your head movement and do POV changes with that. Fun
stuff. You can ofcourse also do these POV changes with any other
controller.

About RL; they're ofcourse still working on it, and no doubt it's
going to be very interesting. Problem with projects that take THIS
long is often that a lot of the techniques get outdated, and you get
close to a point where you'd have to reconsider your entire base
architecture in some areas.
Ofcourse I do hope it will go live sometime, somewhere. Preferably
with a small demo not too far from now.

DX9?

Are you running Win98? Most times this is a firewall or network
problem. No TCP/IP (can that even happen these days? ;) ) or
something. Errors in c:\sims\racer\QLOG.txt like 'Can't create network
socket'.

Empire took all the code and models from WSC, chris had to start from
scratch.  So your analogy doesn't work.  Sure they have built up alot of
knowledge from writing WSC, however everything needed to be written from
scratch.  I chat to Chris everyday (not at the minute as they are moving), i
can assure you that they are both working hard at every minute detail.

I dont even know why I am replying as everyone seems to have made up their
mind about the Westies one way or the other.  I dont see why people give
them such a hard time for trying to produce something good, that may well
advance the Racing Simulation genre.  All this rubbish about how they "hype"
everything - all they have done is create a website for people who are
interested in their product, the same as any other sim writers (me / stefano
/ ruud / todd / LFS guys).  The hype has been created (quite rightly imo) by
the people who think it will be the next big thing in racing simulation (sim
racing news sites etc.).
