GeForce 4600 & N2002 = what?

by vulc » Wed, 06 Mar 2002 03:22:28

I want to pre-order a GeForce 4600 from Gainward. However, I have seen
that the posts on this board are not in favor of a GeForce 4. Here is
my system:

Pentium 4 1.7ghz
Verto GeForce 3 (not Ti)(driver 27.42)
Windows  ME
512 RDRAM (PC800)
IBM DeskStar 75 gig HD
Sound Blaster Plat. Edition 5.1 with external front panels
Klipsch THX 4.1 speakers
19" NEC Multisync FE950+ Monitor
and so on..........

The point is someone has said that if your processor isn't all that
good then a GeForce 4 would help N2002 framerates. I am currently
getting 30-58 in a ffull field. in Nascar 4 I was getting 40-80. I
have done all tweaks. Anyways, a P4 1.7ghz processor should be alright
for noticable difference in FPS with a GeForce 4600..shouldn't it? I
don't want to waste any money here guys, that all. Oh ya, of all the
GeForce 4 4600 manufactures out there, which would you buy?

Whats the price on the Gainward? I love my two Gainward cards and have a
friend with a third and we have nothing but high marks for them. I would
think your p4 1.7 would see a differance with a GF4, its just a question if
how much. I know my friend with the GF3 Ti200 actualy out runs my GF3 so I
would bet a top end GF4 yet.

You may want to check out this thread at the sierra boards:

This gentleman was less than impressed with the difference from a G3 to a G4
4600 and he's running dual processors.

check Tom's article he ran comparing the G3 and the G4 at
www.tomshardware.com . If i remember it correctly, there was no noticeable
improvement in current games/sims using the G4. It doesnt appear that the
128mb of ram on the G4's were being utilized fully.
Dont take me word for word though, just something i read about last week.
As far as the framerate in NR2002, wait for the OGL texture compression
thats supposed to be in the first patch before passing judgement.

I also recall reading an article about the Radeon 8500 that some company had
stuck 128mb of ram on. Result..... No difference in performance. Maybe it's
just that no games in todays market were designed to run with a 128mb card
so they're not going to even see it, let alone use it. I guess we'll just
have to wait around and see.

From what I've heard it will not be a big improvement now. But future Games
( unreal 2 ...ect ) will be taking advantage of the G4 capabilities. What
about a geforce 4400.
just preordered one for $250 delivered.  I have only seen the 4600 for $400

Good luck

You will see a much better performance increaese by keeping your current
video card buying an IwillXP333R motherboard and AMD XP1900+ cpu, oh and
don't forget 512m of PC2100 DDR ram. :-)
