Viper Racing with Voodoo2 SLI

Hi,
I run Viper Racing with one Diamond Monster 2 Voodoo2 card and get 51
fps at 640x480 on a 450 p2 with all detail on except smoke, but when driving
with the bumper cam (looks faster than from inside) the frame rate seems
jumpy, does it help to have 2 voodoo2 cards in SLI.

thanks
Jared

There is something very strange about the way Viper is rendered. If you watch
the mountains when making sharper turns they seem to 'stutter' or 'chop' across
the screen. I'm sure the frame rate is way above 40 but with the further
background scenery stuttering across the screen like it does, it makes the game
look...well... for a lack of better words... 'odd'. I wont go so far as to say
is annoying but it is somewhat distracting. Its not my machine btw. I/we can see
the same thing on my friends high end machine.

I have a P2 266 and get 51FPS with most detail on, in the benchmark,
but when I race it seems much lower, not bad, but still "jerky"
occasionally. I think the FPS benchmark test almost seems to be
recording the frame rate without AI computation load on the CPU.

In any case, it's not a good indication of the actual frame rate
during game play.

Yes, but the problem isn't with the benchmark & it's apparent
smoothness, but rather with the choppy gameplay.  I had about the same
trouble on my P2 400 with a single 12 meg voodoo 2 (getting estimated
50 frames at 640x480 with all detail on).   Any time the joystick was
used for steering, lots of chop resulted.

Solution?  I upgraded from the DirectX-5 3dfx reference drivers to the
newest (October) beta 2 of the 3dfx voodoo2 DirectX6 drivers.  Problem
solved in Viper as well as NFS3.  Doesn't make sense, but it works, so
I won't complain too much :-)

I did _before_ I installed the beta DX6 drivers.  They actually _fixed_
my triangles problem :)

Using just one Monster II, 300Mhz P2, 128MB, Directx6 beta 3dfx drivers
from 3dfx (warning - some say they cause problems), I get 51 fps with
_all_ options turned on at 800X600 :)

I think the DX6 and the drivers are responsible for this...

Watch the road, not the mountains!

Hehe :)
