Can anyone suggest some good opponent strengths for a nice competitive
race using the default setups.  I want to get racing, but I don't have the
time to log hours of practice perfecting my setups.

TIA

I have been racing with my opponent strength around 92-93%.  I also use
the QUAL car and just increase the fuel level.  This makes for a good
race.  My average lap speed is about 5-10 mph faster than the other cars
but I can't seem to sustain the speed as well in the corners so they stay
relativily close in the mirror.  ;)

Good Luck!

That's because a qual car is designed to operate well for a short period
of time and have only so much weight.  The fuel loading for a race setup
is at least 12-20 gallons more than the qual setup whic means that you
have 90-200 pounds more weight in the back.  The tire pressures and shock
settings aren't made to handle this in the turns where lateral Gs make
the weight 270-600 pounds different (3 lateral Gs) than anticipated.

So, that being said, how's the tire wear?

I don't have as much time as I'd like to play this game, so I am only
running 10% of race length.  Tire wear and all other things don't really
even come into play in such a short race.  I'm lucky if I get to finish a
50 lap race before my wife or kid come in and interrupt me.  Oh well, no
one said fatherhood was easy, right?
