Internet Race Finder - Firewall Problems/How do you reach the Author?

by Larr » Tue, 02 Jan 2001 07:09:12

While I certainly appreciate all the effort the author has put into Internet
Race Finder, and certainly appreciate what it offers us, there is this
problem with 2.2 and above and Firewalls that is driving many of us CRAZY!

First, I was using a LinkSYS Router.  After a long time of trying to
configure it to work, and not willing to stay with the DMZ setting (thus
opening my whole machine to the internet) I decided to go back to my Windows
2000 Server as my Gateway/Firewall as it is much more flexible in setting up
port assignments.

Well, guess what.  Same problem.  I've tried opening up both UDP and IP port
4555, and it still doesn't work.

Does anyone know how to reach the author of this program?  He seems to be in
hiding somewhere as there is no contact info that I've been able to find,
anywhere.

I understand none of these issues existed before version 2.2.  What
happened?

Or, even better, if anyone has successfully set up Windows 2000 Server,
acting as the Internet Sharing gateway, please tell me _exactly_ what you
did to get this working.

Thanks!

Sounds to me (with little info), that your problem may lie in IP forwarding.
From what you have explained... your win2k Serv. is your gateway. Which
means that you are running your *** box behind that, and simply using
your win2k box as a gateway.

So my question is:

Have you setup forwarding to your local game machine?

The reason is simple... you can setup win2k as a proxy... but your firewall
must be configured to recognize that your 192.xxx.xxx.xxx machine is the one
sending/requesting the info on that port. Hence, if your gateway machine
(the one holding the firewall) is NOT the actual machine requesting that
info, your firewall will deny access.

Basically put... configure your 4555 port on your gateway to forward to your
*** machine... should work.

If that fails... reply, and we'll work it out.

Cheers,

Schumi

P.S. I am NOT the IRF creator just have tons of experience with
proxies/gateways and firewalls.

Larry,

The author had a problem with the IRF server responding on a different IP
address than what it was receiving on.  This meant firewalls were viewing
the return information as an attack since it was coming in from a different
IP than what the IRF program on your computer sent out.  I saw a message
from him indicating he had fixed it so that it was sending and receiving on
the same IP now, so the problem should be fixed.  Also note that version
2.2.1 has been released.

Hope this helps clear it up.  It should be working now.

Jason,

As I indicated in my original message, I opened up port 4555 via IP and UDP
(since it's up in the air as to which it is) and that did not resolve
anything...

I'd post a clipping of my Win2K server settings window, but I don't want to
get mugged :)

Thanks :)

Have you thought about using an NAT system behind the firewall?

Larry,
Like you I have been frustrated for some time but recently spotted a post
suggesting JD had done some more work on 2.2.1
I've downloaded it again and re-installed (noticed that the exe date is now
22/12 dated)
I've changed nothing on my router and it now works. As before, I've got
ports open for the the 4555, 4301 and info port 2005 (both UDP & TCP). DHCP
is active on my router, as before and a software firewall is in place.
I'm back in business, so DL the latest and try again.

Schumi,

That's the first thing I did.  I've forwarded port 4555 (both UDP and IP,
since there seems to be some confusion as to which it actually is).

Still no joy.

This is really getting annoying :)

Win2K's ICS already uses NAT.

I could use the more heavy-duty NAT built into Remote Access and Routing,
but it's the same thing with just more features.  Features I don't really
need.
