N2: ver 1.04 needed ?!

by Michael E. Carve » Fri, 16 May 1997 04:00:00

I just tried out the 1.03 patch for NASCAR2.  I ran the patch over the
1.02(1) version.  Now when I try a testing session at Bristol, the
moment I step on the gas the game locks up and sticks in one of the
"sound loops".  If I first try a practice run under Basic Race option,
things seem fine.  When I switch back to a solo Testing session, it may
run for a while, but then locks up.

This happens in both the dma & non-dma rendition mode.  (Didn't try it
with nascar2.exe.)  I have a P5-166 with a Thrustmaster T1 w/ACM card.
I did not have any trouble with any of the T1 problems with 1.02(1).

I guess it's only fair that those of us who didn't have a complaint with
the first patch, should get stuck with a problem with the 2nd patch.
;-)

I had Nascar 2 crash on me at Bristol after installing the second
patch.  It had never crashed before.

Yep! The first patch didn't seem to lurch to the right for me. Infact
everything was pretty smooth. I installed th new patch yesterday an
ran a practice at Bristol (nite), my favorite track that I normally
kill 'em at. Could'nt keep it off the wall, maybe it's my wheel but me
thinks it's the patch. If so I'll take it out and revert to the first
patch I guess. More testing needed at other tracks.

Ya just can't win I guess Michael !

Maybe you guys should just go back install the first patch and be done with
it all.  All the second patch fixes is the lurching and I asume since youi
didn't have a compiaint  that you didn't have the problem.

Nathan - the second patch does fix a few other things, but they are mostly
details.

STN files text formatting of the header line was fixed, and the qual order
is corrected; calendar dates are in correct order; the green border on
night c***te is fixed (this one you should be able to keep if you choose
to revert to V1.02); restored games include tire temps for outside and
middle as well as inside of tires.

I haven't seen much response to the patch up here aside from a few
complaints about new problems.  Has anyone who was having lurching problems
and who has a Pentium based system still got joystick or wheel problems?

The joystick problems I had running N2 under Win95 with the first patch
were totally fixed by the second patch.  Thanks Charlie / Papyrus!

going into turns.

P-MMX 166 with a T2 in Dos

I wasn't having problems with the lurch on my newer Pentium, but I was /
still am having calibration problems.  They aren't really problems, more
like anoyances(sp). When I run N2, and go to Options, then calibrate my T1,
everything works, at least 90% of the time.  But if I go straight to Quick
Race, then try to calibrate from that option screen, it almost always
screws up the calibration.  Ie, the brake turns into the gas after aplying
about 2/3s pedal.  When looking at the cal values, the break appears normal
until it reaches 2/3s then it shows -1 as the value.  The fix, for me, is
to just exit the program, run N2 again and calibrate from the main menu
options screen.  No files are deleted.  Don't know why, but that is the way
it works on my system.

Any all my problems are fixed, too.  T2/Win95 perfect!

Oh, and I have a Cyrix 166.

Thanks Charlie!

PMFJI, Charlie but I just had to say a big THANKS for getting the patch for
the patch out so quickly!  I had the lurching problem (although it wasn't
horrendous) but now it is perfect again with version 1.03.

Hi,
The 2nd patch for NASCAR 2 fixed my T2 wheel lurching aswell, great
work Papy!  I do have one suggestion for future patches, however.  I
found it sort of annoying that I had to use the original track text
files from the CD so the patch would install properly.  The only
modification I made to the files was setting each track so it had
maximum field size.  Is there any way future patches could simply
modify the current files instead of requiring the original files from
the CD?  I realize that the current install is probably on the safer
side.  Just a suggestion.  However, it is better to have the patch
actually install properly, instead of causing problems by complicating
the matter.

Keep up the great work Papy!
John

That is not all that was patched with the 2nd patch.  And to be
truthful, I've experienced the lurching, but very rarely with the first
patch.  It seems to affect some people way more than others, but I don't
really want to have it happen after hours of hard work in a race.  But,
then I guess I could just chalk it up to mechanical failure.

In the meantime I am using the 1.02 version of the .exe

Charlie,I still get a slight twitch at Talledaga and Sears Point, and Dover. It
doesn't seem to be all that bad and think I can live with it.I'm running a
p200 w/32 megs of ram and an Intergraph Reactor card,T2 w/ACM game card.
Only major complaint here is the lack of AA.Having purchased a 3d card just
for N2 I feel kinda cheated after seeing how awsome ICR2 is.How about it
Pappy? Thanks for the quick work on the second patch.
