IndyCar Version 1.04 crack

by JAMES BRO » Thu, 05 May 1994 21:31:51

Has anybody tried the IndyCar Version 1.04 crack at didnt.doit.wisc.edu?
The file is a text file that tells you what to do to crack the copy
protection.  It mentions that you must have the 1.04 patch...I do, it tells
you the size of the new INDYCAR.EXE and the date so you can verify you have
the correct INDYCAR.EXE file...I do.  Then it says:

                    FILE TO SEARCH:  INDYCAR.EXE

                    SEARCH STRING: E8 EA E1 FD FF  CHANGE TO:  B8 04 04 00 00

                    SEARCH STRING: E8 5C 5F FE FF  CHANGE TO:  B8 04 04 00 00

Do you have to have a specific editor?  I pulled the INDYCAR.EXE file in the
DOS editor and searched, but couldn't find the string...I'm sure someone is
probably laughing at me, but I could sure use some help.

Thanks

I haven't tried it myself, but I received a mail message telling me it
worked
on the European version (1.04e). I never verified it, since I don't care
about opening my manual for the password. You are not the first person
unable
to locate the string given. I am not sure if the crack was meant just for
the
European version. Anybody who was able to make it work, please post the
answer.

The file was found at

ftp.uwp.edu

in

uplaods/ms_dos/romolous/cracks

No idea who placed it there.

I followed the instructions and it works fine for me. Thank God! No more
flipping through the manual.

You need to use a hex editor, the DOS editor is a text editor so it won't
work. PCtools, Norton utilities ccome with  hex editors (also called
binary editors I think).

Good luck.

okay- I tried to post before, but for some reason My emacs was messed up
and I couldn't use my regular news reader so I am using one that will
solve the bug.  I got the crack to work by using hexed editor.  This was
not as easy as finding the string in hex however.  I had to convert the
string to ascii using one of my text books (believe that) then I searched
it and wrote in the new hex values.  The word remains the same every time
    you play.

    Matt

PS  - the word is available in the manual to all legal owners!!

If you have Norton Utilities or PCShell ( PCTools ) you can do this. You
can also use DOS's DEFRAG, but I don't know to much on that. Just go into
NOrton and choose DISK EDITOR, you will have to change the settings from
READ ONLY to WRITE. There's an option to "SEARCH...". Choose that and enter
the HEX string in ( above ), when it finds it, click on the first letter
of the string ( E ) and make the changes, just type the new string in.
Then "SEARCH" for the next string and change that. When your done SAVE
the changes and your all set. I recommend you make a backup copy of you
INDYCAR.EXE first! :)

I am a legal owner of INDYCAR.  I have the American version of 1.04.  I used the
crack for 1.04 and it works beautifully.  I don't have to use the manual anymore.
I do have to remember the secret word each time, but that's okay.  I also used
Norton's Disk Editor to edit INDYCAR.EXE.
