I posted before, but I really need to know.

I have Intergraph Reactor, P166, and running an 83mhz bus speed.

I run the DMAtest and get 138.7m/b per sec for DMA. Is this good?
PCI Latency at 255. DMA ECD mode at 3.

What are you guys getting?????

Since he's running at the 83mhz bus speed, it really can only be one of
a few boards.  Most likely it's the Asus P/I-P55T2P4, but it could also
be an M-Tech R-534 or Gigabyte GA-586S.  I don't know of any other
boards that can run at 83mhz.

I have an old Tyan Titan III MB (P-133).

Award 4.51 BIOS (no PCI latency settings)                       67 MB/sec
MR BIOS (PCI latency settings have no effect)           11 MB/sec
AMI BIOS  (various PCI latency settings)                        67-112MB/sec

I read a msg somewhere that PCI latency over 96 clks can sometimes
cause problems with ISA cards.

I have the Asus P55T2P4 Rev 3.1. It runs at 83 and 75 mhz also.

It's great.......30 or 40 is poor.......80+ is as good as it gets.

I too have am running a 83x2 P166 (Asus).  I had never messed with the
PCI latency timer before I read your post.  I was getting DMA scores
around 100 with the default setting of 32.   I changed the clock timer
to 255 like yours and my DMA test score went to 145!!!  Whats going on
here?   What does this timer do?  N2 doesn't appear to be any faster..

By the way, going to an 83 mhz bus is one of the easyest and  cheapest
way to upgrade your system.  My 83x2 benches better or nearly better
than most P200s.  The thing is as solid as can be, not one crash in
the month I've been using it.

I had never messed with PCI Latency timing before I saw your post so I
thought I'd play.  I too have a new Asus board and am running at 83x2.
With the default setting of 32 I was getting DMAtest scores around
100.  Bumped it up to 255 and now get scores of 145!!!
I can't really see any difference in N2 though.  Does anyone know
what  this timing setting does?
By the way, getting a board with a 83 mhz bus is one of the best and
cheapest ways to upgrade.  My 83x2 benches faster than by friends
P200.  Check out  http://sysdoc.pair.com/ for more info.

Game performance seems to Max out at about 90mb/sec or so.  Any DMA
performance above that level has no noticeable effect.  Yes, a P166
running at 83x2 is quite fast.  I'm actually looking at running a P200
at 80x2.5 (208mhz) or 75x3 (225mhz) depending on weather I get an HX or
VX board.

Eric,
I run my P200 at 83x2.5. I also tested with 75x3, and 83MHz bus is
faster than 75MHz. I'm yet to try 83x3 (250MHz) ... :-)

Once you reach around 90Mb/sec I find it makes NO difference in Nascar2.  You
may want to adjust your PCI latency so that you get around 90 in the DMA tests,
and does not impact the rest of the system by maxing out the timer.  I am
running the same board (Asus p55t2p4) at 66Mhz (x3) with a P200 processor and
getting right around 100Mb/sec with the timer set to 64.  In other words,
people with DMA transfer rates of more that 100Mb/sec are like people with
512MB or RAM in their home pc...sounds COOL, but what the heck are you going to
use it for?(Smile)

I know the 83x2.5 will be faster than the 75x3, but as far as I know no
VX board (which I want for SDRAM support) has the 83mhz bus speed.
BTW, as long as you properly cool the CPU (to keep it's operating
temperatures in the working range of -25C to +80C), it's technically
possible to run it at any speed.

Would an STB Lightspeed 128 feel OK at 75-83 MHz bus speeds?

Sincerely, Karim

While STB would probably disagree, but I have yet to hear of any PCI
cards having trouble at these speeds.
