Problem with Thrustmaster T2 and Win98

by jctor.. » Tue, 13 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Hi all. I'll really appreciate some help on this:

Obviusoly you are very serious simulator players and I'm pretty sure
that most of you use a steering wheel. Well, I own an oldie (but
gloroius) Thrustmaster Formula T2 wheel. I remember that I had a lot of
problems when I configured it in Win95 a few years ago. Know, I
upgraded my whole hardware and OS to Win98 and it's taking me longer to
configure it.

Here's my problem: When I run TMSCOPE to check the wheel, it detects it
in por 3A and 4A. According to this utility, this means that my
joystick is connected to gamecard #3 or #4 in port A, but I don't have
any gamecard installed. I'm using the standard gameport of the inboard
Creative soundcard.

When I plug a standard joystick, TMSCOPE detects it in port 1A ?!?!?

The only way to make W98 detect the wheel is by clicking several times
(and I mean SEVERAL TIMES) the RETRY button in the properties dialog of
the joystick in control panel. Then I calibrate it and it works normal,
until the next reboot.

Anybody had a problem like this before? I have the Propanel utility and
DirectX7 installed.

Thanks in advance

Juan Carlos

Hello!

According to TM you should not need the Pro Panel or the TMScope
programs to get it working if you have DX5 or higher installed. I'd
remove them and follow TM's instructions at their website.

http://www.thrustmaster.com/support/readtechnote.php3?id=32

Also check for new sound board drivers. It sounded like you may have old
ones from your post.

Hope this helps. The old TM pro is not a bad wheel. It just needs some
help. Rebuilds and improvments are available at

www.thundervalleysims.com

Good luck, I'll be watching for a progress report. :-)

Problem with Thrustmaster T2 and Win98

by jctor.. » Tue, 13 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Hi Larry. Thanks for answering.

Actually what Tmscope does is display information about the hardware
(if it's actually working) and Propanel only help in the calibration
process.

I have followed Thrustmaster's instructions with no result.
The problem is that for some reason Win95/98 doesn't recognize the T2.
In the manuals was written that I needed an adapter to play Win95 based
games, but inside the box was an addendum to the manual that said that
despite of what the manual said, the adapter was no needed anymore.

But, surprise, when I installed it and tested it, I found that the
adapter was needed for windows because the pedals worked on the X axis
of Joystick 2 and the wheel on X axis of joystick 1. So I build my own
adapter and it worked OK.

The nightmare is now back after upgrading my PC and W95 to W98.

It's really strange because as I said in my last post, it works after
pressing "Retry" several times in Control Panel.

Weird isn't it?

Greetings

Juan Carlos

Problem with Thrustmaster T2 and Win98

by larryh.. » Wed, 14 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Hello again,

<snip>

Yes true, but TM does not recomend using them with DX5 or higher. They
sometimes can cause problems. They are old utilities.

<snip>

One thing that can cause this is old and dirty pots. If the pots do not
read correctly when control panel polls them you get this effect. Broken
wires and cold solder joints can do it too.

You did not say anything about sound board drivers. Win95 drivers and
Win98 don't always get along that well.

As for the rest of this....

You wheel should work normally if use the T1/T2 WITH ADAPTER setting in
the WIN98 game controler panel. If not try the without adapter setting.
It can't hurt to try it. The most likely cuprit here is dirty pots. Good
luck! BTW what game(s) are you playing with and what type for system do
you have?

Are you installing the T2 as a "Custom Device" in the control
panel joystick applet??? You need to do this and check the
box for "driving controller".

Also, you need the adapter if the wheel had a date code before
November 95 I think. The date code is found on the white
sticker on the bottom of the wheel unit.

Anyway, once you get the wheel and pedals on the same
axis the wheel should look like a simple X-Y axis 4 button
joystick to the system. TMSCOPE doesn't hurt because it
give you the raw DOS joystick information and proves that
the stick/wheel is working to some degree. If it works in
TMSCOPE then there is nothing wrong with the wheel
and it should work in W98/W95.

Propanel should be left alone IMHO. I never needed it in
my 4-5 years of using the TM T2... Plus now that we are
up to DX7 the propanel is probably not all that compatible.

True for Propanel, not true for TMSCOPE, as TMSCOPE is a
DOS application and in no way would interfere with the Windows
part of anything.

Problem with Thrustmaster T2 and Win98

by jctor.. » Wed, 14 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Hi. Well, Larry and Greg thanks for answering once again. My PC is a
Celeron 500, 64MB RAM and a Voodoo Banshee. I'm playing NFS4 and I'm
gonna get RallyChampionship2K tomorrow so I was preparing my system for
it.

Yes, I have installed it that way but I'm not sure if I checked
the "driving controller" box (I'll check it out later)

There's something else. Sometimes it seems that when I press the pedals
(Y axis) too much, somehow it disconnects (like it's returning a value
out the range). I solve It calibrating once again.

Yeah...I've used my T1 for years and have never needed any special utilities
for it...no propanel, no nothing, just whatever the OS or game had.
