Problems with Nascar Racing 4 demo

by adamcheha » Sat, 17 Aug 2002 05:20:06

I'm able to install the demo to Nascar Racing 4, and I'm able to
initialise the demo, but once I'm through to the title screen and I
try to start a race I receive the message "cannot initiate replay", or
something similar.

Any ideas what the problem is?

Do you have more than 512MB RAM installed under a Win9X OS?

Sorry, I should have stated my PC specs:

--Windows ME
--Pentium 4 2GB
--1024MB RAM
--GeForce4 (64MB)

SO the answer is yes.  Either take 512 out, unless you are using something(an app) that requires
loads of memory like MASSIVE Photoshop work or something, WinME will not take advantage of it
anyway, OR try setting the replaymemoryoverride=512000 in the core.ini file in the N4 folder.  Like
I said, Win9X OS's don't take any advantage of more than 512MB of RAM and cause problems with many
programs.  The same does not apply to NT based OS's(NT/Win2K/XP).

You said it causes problems - what sort of problems? With such a high
spec PC I was expecting superb frame rate, but to run games like F1
2002 at a reasonable frame rate (25fps or so) I have to run the
resolution in 640x640 and only anti-aliasing x2. At any higher
resolutions the frame rate is almost unbareable, so without anti
aliasing switched on it's tediously blocky. Could this be a result of
'too much' RAM?

I'm using the latest drivers for my video card.

The only reason I have so much RAM is that I wanted 512MB, but Dell
doubled it for free!

Aren't you having a problem now?  I suspect that the video card is a GF4 MX?  Its a terrible card
for ***, its barely faster than a GF2 card, so that is another problem.  Also make sure you have
vsync disabled

No, it's a GeForce3 (64MB). I haven't noticed a difference in frame
rate in any game title whether Vsync is on or off.

With all the latest drivers (including DirectX) I'm left clueless as
to the problem of frame rates. It's sonic fast in all Windows apps...
all except games!
