GPL Starts and Clutch

GPL Starts and Clutch

by Phil Le » Thu, 27 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I have now been driving in GPL for just over a month.  It seems to have
taken over my life!

Anyway, after getting pretty consistent at Monza, I have just started racing
offline.  The problem I'm having at the moment is with the starts.  I use an
LWFF and CH pedals.  I have been using the accelerator pedal on the Logitech
pedals as a clutch with the CH Pedals for the accelerator and brake.  I
can't decide whether the clutch works as an analogue or digital device in
GPL.

Is there any merit in using the pedal as a clutch to try to get some clutch
slip like you do in a normal car or would I be better using a button on the
wheel as the clutch which would be either on or off?

Cheers

Phil

It has to be analog, but IRL a racing clutch is pretty much an on/off thing
too. I tried the same setup as you, but returned to using a button. It's
just as effective, much more practical and you don't really need the clutch
anyway.

The clutch in GPL can be programmed to be used with a button.. On/Off
digital.  It can also be used with a peddle.. Analog.  I'm assuming that
with the analog setup, it's coded to be like a competition clutch where
there's very little travel between full disengaged and full engageded.
With the analog setup, there is no question that you can slip the
clutch.  The problem with GPL and having an analog clutch is that there
is no penilty for not using it such as grinding gears, missing a shift,
and the like.  So, out side of realism, there is no real use for the
clutch.

At one time, after a spin I would use the clutch to spin me back
around. But I was never in such a possition where that one or two
seconds would gain me anything. (nobody like to race close.  They just
want to do laps with zero risk)  Any case, I quit using the clutch all
together.
