Are you thinking of what I was thinking of?  Battlestation 2000 or whatever it was called?

Dunno if anyone here saw that, but in 1999 or so some single-person developer got a publisher for a game he had been working on
for 10 years or something like that.  It was supposed to be the next best thing to sliced bread for the
space-travel-star-wars-battle games.  When it came out, everyone took one look and said..."all the hype for THIS???"  Needless
to say, had it been released 5 years earlier, it would have really been something....

Cheers!

> West Brothers and their "Legends" creation?

They stopped writing that.  The West Bros. are currently creating a project
we've heard called "GPaL".  I really don't know what it will become of that
project, hmm.... o_0

Analogy time!!

1a. Racing Legends is like the "Elite 4" of the racing community.
(conversely)
1b. The West bros are like the David Braben of the racing community.

I sold 5 copies of that game in my shop, 4 of them was returned within a

In that case you're in luck mate, some really clever people I know are
working on a mod for N2003, Stan "That's not a knife" Allen has sworn to
succeed or die, since he's Bruce's age that is a little worrying of
course, but ....:-)

Told you so, just wait until Doug Ellison finds this thread :-)

Someone I know recently spoke to one of them and they're still at it
apparently, which is good news I suppose, and they're very committed,
I'll give them that, apparently they sold their house to fund the
continuation of the project...

Which is both good and bad news I suppose, shows the level of
commitment, but also shows that they are flat broke at this point, which
is sad as while I have my doubts about them ever finishing it, I would
have been right there, credit card in hand, looking to get a copy as
soon as humanly possible

They tried to make the best racing simulator ever, which is great, but they
tried to do it in one release, which is stupid, and a perfect example of how
not to undertake software development.

Look at it this way, if the West's had spent 2 years making a sim that was
exactly the same as GTR2002, not perfect by any means, but one of the best
sims available, with some driving aids, they could have sold it
commercially, raked in the cash - to plumb back into developing a newer,
better version.

Also, everybody in RAS would be shouting at the top of their voice about
just how amazing the West's were, with their amazing sim, even modelling
tyre temps / brake temps etc.

Not to mention how much better the West's were compared to that roundabout
Papy stuff <g>

Well, if they had to sell their house in order to fund further work, maybe
they SHOULD be committed.
That's a hell of a thing to do without any guarantee at all of success,
financial or oherwise.

You and me both, Goy.
Two years ago I actually put off upgrading my PC until Wests product was
released....and then there was that ugly scene with Empire Interactive and
the whole thing went bleccch!

I have a feeling that we will never see the result of their dream. It will
take a financial miracle to occur.

Bruce.

I recently spoke with a friend who is dating a girl that works with a
dude that is engaged to the barmaid that serves the West Brothers beer
at a local tavern.....and HE said that they are scraping the "Racing
Legends" idea and using the "CORE" of the software engine to develope
a new sim based on the WILDLY popular sport of "Pinewood Derby"
racing.
WHEN they are finished ( he said they would have a working demo out
as soon as the legal issues are ironed out with the Boy Scouts...)they
will have every detail imaginable pertaining to "Derby" racing such
as: 1)when you start the game, you must first use a "Virtual" set of
X-acto knives to carve your piece of wood...the full version will let
you choose the denisity of your block of wood!! 2) The full version
will also include as many as 10 different color schemes to apply to
your creation ( an intergrated paint program will be available soon
after the "Official" release as an add-on for only $59.00 BUT will
include at no charge a "Racing Legends" OR "World Sports Car" dust
cover for your mouse!) 3)Gravity will also be modeled like never
before! Choose a higher altitude for some REALLY crazy racing action!
4)If you are a "newbie" and want to get right into the action, there's
always the virtual "Dad" you can choose to help you with your car.He
will carve it and align your wheels for you...if you win enough races,
you can trade up to a REALLY cool dad that will even paint it for you
while you watch cartoons!

 Obviously i'm a big fan of satire...LOL

I think we all get that sinking feeling when we read posts about
"RL"...the whole "west Bros." thing reminds me of "The Wizard of OZ"
....It's not hard to start making comparisons after you ponder it
awhile.....sigh.
