I've always accessed this NG thru Netscape 4.5 and haven't had any problem
until now.

It seems that Netscape now hangs (ie- not responding) when I access this NG,
but works fine with all other NG's that I subscribe to.  I'm currently using
Outlook Express to send this message, but would really like to go back to
Netscape.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Don't know here.  FWIW, I'm using Netscape 4.72 right now.  Maybe an
issue with your ISP?
Rock on April 5th, & the debut of Netscape 6!

You've been sabotaged by Microsoft. Now you must use Outlook Express!

Try un-subscribing from this NG, and then subscribe again, you will need
to DL a serious amount of messages, but that fixed it for me a while
back, although I had to remove the news server as well

If the next version of Netscape isn't any better than the 4.5 and so on
that we have now, I'm converting to MS IExplorer after 5 years of being
a Netscape user, these latest versions have been so unstable for me that
it's getting to be really annoying

I was having a similar problem when trying to read this news group. I
found this in a Netscape FAQ: Possibly a corrupt news folder, delete the
.snm file in the news sub-directory.

I remember having to stop reading this group for about a year or so back
in '97-'98 because I couldn't access it with Netscape -- hung up like a
noose.  but I'm posting and reading now with Netscape Communicator
4.72...  no problems.

I agree 100%, I hate MS with a passion, but am getting very pissed off
with hangs, freezes, other random***ups. Especially when the same
page works with IE no probs. Don't know why I perservere really...

I take it you & Goy are using Netscape in Win95, as opposed to 98?  I
used to have the same problems with my Win95 OSR2 & Netscape, but since
"upgrading"(?) to Win98, there hasn't been any problem of that nature.
I do remember how infuriating it used to be!  Only reasons I never
switched over to IE is that it's such a resource hog, and it's *ugly*!

Win98SE, WinNT40 SP6a, Win2000PRO........still sucks up a LOT of
resources and will often hang or freeze or whatever, most annoying on
the PC I use at home with Win98 though as I have to reboot every now and
then, sometimes you just love WinNT :-)

I just looked at the "Task Manager" in NT, I have 5 "windows" open in
both IE and Netscape, IE=10MB of RAM, Netscape=17MB of RAM.....

Ugh, getting closer and closer to convert to IE, but I hate MS on
principle :-)

LOL!  Just remember who owns the O/S that the Netscape is running on.
;-)  Remember the old days, with the fake Windows error dialog boxes
when it detected an install of DR DOS as opposed to MS DOS?  Don't let
them bastards win! =-)

They just lost, didn't they :-)))

I must admit, I have never used any OS besides MS, although I felt very
adventurous a while back and installed Linux on a spare PC we had here
in the shop........never got around to do anything more though, looked
interesting, but time is not always the thing I have most of these days

I think that's where a lot of us got to with Linux.  I set up a dual boot on
my notebook, got all e***d when I managed to get X up and running on the
flat panel, felt 5 years younger when I got the modem to work, and nearly
lifted off the ground when I managed to get my PC-Card network card to talk
to the office network.  Then I just sort of stared at it, smiled a smile of
satisfaction and switched off.  Apart from occasionally running my X-windows
stuff on the notebook instead of the SGI workstation, I am still a MS slave
because everyone else in the world is a MS slave.  Gotta' go with the flow
when you are exchanging papers, reports, figures etc.

Maybe in a few years...

Exactly, and although I'm sure the "geeks" (positive meaning) love it
for all the right reasons, it needs a bit of corporate backing to make
it more mainstream, I'm sure it will come one day

Hm, I have to disagree. Almost everybody who writes scientific papers
uses TeX/LaTeX, or at least non MS Word or something like that. Maybe
not in the business world. Windows is not used very often in an
academic setting either.

Hm, come to think of it. The only reason I switch to windows is to
play a few games. I don't do anything else with it (wouldn't know
how). I took the TRS-80/Apple II/BBC/Macintosh/Linux route (I bought
my first PC to run linux, which was good because all our work at the
university was done on unix machines).

It gave me the opportunity to play GPL though :-)

Microsoft annoys me as much as the next guy, but have you ever used
Netscape on Solaris?  It is without a doubt the buggiest piece of ***
I have ever had the displeasure of using.  There aren't many programs
that can crash a Unix workstation, but Netscape manages it at least once
a week.
