When did downloading something become an effort?  You just start the
download and do something else until it's done.  Start it when you go to bed
and sleep.  Start it on your computer and minimize it and drive your
favorite sim.  What's the big deal?  If it sucks or doesn't run, then just
delete it, it doesn't really cost anything to download it and doesn't
require you to stare at the progress indicator, either.

When I came home from work and read my email and checked r.a.s. messages, I
clicked on the URL posted to get to the download site for the Demo.  I
started the download and went to have dinner with my family.  I have so far
gotten 10.2 MEG of it.  I'm sitting here answering email and reading more
r.a.s., and I expect the demo to finish dribbling in on my poky 56K modem
(running at a stunning 26400) by around 1030.  If it doesn't work, then so
what?  No skin off my teeth.

SNIP Lots of stuff concerning the abundance of "free local phone calls in USA"

David I'm pretty sure that in Australia they pay for there local phone calls, pretty
much in the same way as we in Europe and probably the rest of the world too.
So It isn't just a case of going to bed or going to a bar or whatever WE have to think
of it in a monetary thang also.
Like the TOCA 2 demo wont work on my machine "pretty standard hardware" so I spent 2
hours on my phone for NOTHING.

Hmmm - it will cost at least a couple of pounds to download a demo
here in the UK, at least one that large. Personally I almost never
download any demos unless I'm pretty convinced they're going to be
worthwhile (almost never). Then too there is the size of them - I like
the look of Links LS99, but 50Mb for a demo? FIFTY?! I'll stick with
my original Links LS and save money on my 'phone bill and my credit
card (mind you, since it finally has St. Andrews it would be nice to
have, even if they make the usual mistake of calling St. Andrews the
birthplace of golf).

Cheers!

Yeah, we pay for our local calls - but a flat rate of about 20 cents
regardless of how long the call is.
So once I'm connected, it costs me nothing to stay connected, as my
ISP has unlimited time for $AU110 per three months.
So Daxe's comments were spot on from my perspective.
Cheers
Alan.

No, they sound pretty much like they were- Naive, and ***erish.

For one, not everyone has a dedicated line- i remember when i first got
started with the net, while we had free local calls, i was sharing a phone
line with other inhabitants.

So, tying up a phone line in a flat of many for 2 hours is easily quite
rude....

regardless of how much it may cost.

Uhhh, most people pay for their ISP access time and many people also have to
pay for telephone call access time.  Since when is anything free?  I am
fortunate enough to not have to pay for specific calls and I have a
permanent Internet connection, but I am also not ignorant enough to think
that everyone else is in the same boat...but then I am also not an American
(let the flames begin :) ).

Mark, John, Paul, et al...

Okay, okay. Valid points.

On behalf of Daxe, and all Americans, I apologize.

That is dreadful!

Back about 4-5 years ago, internet access of any kind outside of a school
was hourly and pretty expensive if you spent much time there, but it quickly
dropped to 15~20$ a month for unlimited access and that remains the
standard.  I figured the rest of the world was keeping up with the advance
of technology, but forgot that prices are somewhat less market-driven in
places with economies that are less free or with utilities that are
state-owned or controlled.

Huh.

Bonehead...I didn't waste anything.  It worked for me.  It's not my fault or
my problem that it didn't work for you.

Huh?

Yes, but since I am an American, it is pretty unlikely that I would be
making any other kind, isn't it?  I have posted that I just didn't know and
now I do.  I stand corrected.  I am sure you are perfect and omniscient and
know everything about everything that happens everywhere in the world,
right?

I have a 56K modem and I live in the woods.  There are no connections
locally that support the 56K, so it functions as a 33,6 modem.  I almost

1/2 hours to download the 20 Meg demo.  What are you going to do?  Carry
each byte of data in a wheelbarrow to your house?

Dont apologize on my behalf, thanks.

I didn't know the phone was so expensive, and now I do.  I won't make the
same kind of commments again with an international audience, but I'm not
sorry I did.  I don't have much patience for people who want something and
whine when they have to pay for it, anyway.

The internet isn't free here, either, but the phone bill gets paid to have a
phone.  It doesn't increase because you are downloading something.  My point
was:

If you already have a phone and internet access, why should downloading a
large demo cost any more?  Now I know.
