Win98 and GPL probs!

by Roge » Mon, 21 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Up till now I was running GPL on a Win 95, AMD K6 166 Mhz system with a
Voodoo 2 3D Blaster from creative.
Everything ran fine, a little slow, but it worked!

Now I bought myself a nice and shiny Pentium II 400Mhz system, with
Win98, I put in the Voodoo 2 card as well, the 2D card is a ATI
Xpert98-8MB, and GPL is*** up.
After it starts, it switches over to the driver-info screen right away,
and after a few moments it just hangs itself, sometimes along with a
flickering mouse-pointer, the system the totally blocks, I have to reset
it to start again.
I installed the lastest reference drivers by 3DFX and the problem is
till there, so I don't think it's the Voodoo card, can anyone help me
out here, cause I finally wanna enjoy GPL is rock-steady 36 FPS  LOL!!!

Please help!

Regards,

Roger

Have you tried reinstalling GPL?

Your Problem is that GPL need the Glide 2.53 drivers not the 2.54 Drivers ..
read othe messages about GPL lockups

It may be something else, but I had a similar problem with Win98 and
GPL, using a CL-Voodoo2. I was able to drive, but after some times, when
I entered or exited the***pit, it took my computer (P2-333, 256Mb Ram)
up to 20 Minutes to switch between Video modes.

I first thought it was the processor or the Voodoo2 getting too hot. I
checked the processor temperature, and it was 'normal' (28 or 30 degree
centigrade).
My next guess was that the screen blanker would start whenever I drove
long enough and didn't use any mouse or Keyboard controls. And as it was
running along with the game, it had a hard time registering and reacting
to the occasional Shift-R.
Disabling the screen Blanker didn't help, but it was the right track I
think.

Win98 tries to defragment and scandisk your HD's automatically whenever
the computer isn't used. Yesterday I disabled this (under
Accessories->system Tools you have two points called 'scheduled events'
and 'maintenance Wizard' (I think) and the game ran perfectly for the
rest of the evening, so I hope that this was the solution.

bye,
Sammy

Thanks mate!!!

I searched through my pile of CD-ROM to find the old drivers, installed
them....and it worked!!!
Thanks a lot for your tip.....
Afterall, GPL is one of the main reasons for getting the PII 400 Mhz in
the 1th place..... I was really on the edge of installing Windows 95
again ;-))
