Win98 full version and GPL

For those who are wondering if the GPL demo still has problems in the
full version of Windows 98, the answer is yes.

I received the full version on Monday from Microsoft (I work in a
computer store, remember, so they gave me a copy to get familiar
with it in time to answer customer questions).  I hadn't tried
running any games on it yet until seeing here that folks were
having trouble with it.  Sure enough, the sounds go insane, like
it's playing one sound at a time then cycling through them.
I also was unable to escape or even ctrl-alt-del, so had to
hit the reset button on my computer.

This was with a Diamond Stealth II S220 video card, and a
Turtle Beach Tropez Plus sound card, on a system with a K6
300MHz running at 75 x 4, 40MB of RAM.

Now then, getting my ACM Game Card installed in Win98 also
has been impossible so far.  Can't run the Add New Hardware
wizard because in 98 it doesn't give you the option for it
not to search for new hardware, and my computer locks up
when it tries to search -- probably because of the card
being there, which is what I suspect causes the machine
to lock up when I try to shut down 98.  Guess I might have
to remove the card, install the drivers again (why they
disappeared during the upgrade is anybody's guess), then
reinstall the card.  I'd use the port on my sound card,
but I have my MIDI cables in it...

I suppose the real answer is just to wait for USB steering
wheels to come out and get one of them!  USB is so damn nifty:
Never need to turn off or restart the machine; with USB speakers
you don't even need a sound card for digital (PURE digital, too!)
sound; no power cables for scanners and cameras and stuff, and you
never run out of ports for new devices -- just get a USB hub or two
and shove everything in -- unless you have over 120 or something
devices, of course...

Well, one hint from me, or at least it is me repeating what I read in some
Dutch group, Some folks who worked together with M$ on the beta and
development have mentioned that it is much much better to install on a clean
system than to upgrade. It seems to create a faster and more stable sytem,
and it will make use of the latest drivers. That's what they say, I am only
repeating it....\

Er, Windows 98 final has not been available for "a couple of
weeks."  It's only available to the public currently as OEM
on new computers.  I only have it 'cause Microsoft gave me a
copy at a Windows 98 Reseller Training Camp.

eek!

Ah well... Apparently there are some kludges to try, anyway.
Haven't started trying them yet, m'self.

Hi!

Listen it has got nothing to do with Win98 !
The fact is that the gpl demo really was code round late 1997. They
didn't have an win98 source code then!

So don't worry, it's a fact that they MUST test it on win98....

It is not an OEM version that is already out of windows98. It's that
microsoft wants to release win98 as soon as possible so they will be able to
sell much of the origanol ver of win98 before the doj might make them change
it.

Nope. Common sense. A lot of people will upgrade to W98. Since GPL
will be released after the release of W98, they better make sure that
it runs on W98. Would you buy a game if it runs on CP/M, even if it's
a very good game?

Trust me, GPL will run just fine OOTB in Win98.
