I have three questions, if anyone can help:

1)After running laps in training mode I return to the "race control" menu to
view the laps times and see that some of them are missing, with XXX instead
of the lap time. These are not just the first lap or laps where I returned
the pits, or even did a shift+R... in fact, I cant figure out any common
denominator. For example I ran three laps straight at the ring, and all
three came up as XXX. Tonight I ran a bunch of consecutive laps at Rouen,
and the XXX were sprinkled amoung the lap times.

Does anyone know what causes this?

2)Another problem I'm having is that after loading and viewing a replay, or
sometimes when I exit the race control screen, GPL just quits, as in
vanishes. This is using the D3D rasterizer... has anyone seen this problem?

3)Last problem is simply that when I setup a dedicated server using VROC I
have been selecting the loose starting grids -- but they never take effect
in the game. Any advice on this one?

On number 1, don't want to criticise your driving :), but it couldn't be
excursions onto the grass could it? GPL is quite severe with such trips,
particularly on the inside of some sharp turns. There's a few turn like
this at the ring. It's the only thing I can think of that gets training
laps scrubbed off.

Not seen that except in online races on a questionable connect

no idea...

the grids don't work in winvroc for dedicated hosting at least i've never got
them to work. what i do is change all my grids manually on the host

I experience this more often than I'd like to admit at the Ring. There's
one particular series of corners where I carry too much speed into the first
and end up cutting across a large grassy area before joining the track again
as it curves to the right. Sure enough, I'll end up with the "XXX" lap time
when I do that.

Incidentally, the XXX would be an appropriate rating for my language after
seeing that the lap time didn't count.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if it's exactly the same corner I used to
have problems with, there's sort of a big compression (Metzgesfeld) after a
flat-out twisty bit (Adenauer-Forst), then you got up a really big hill into
the trees, there's a third gear left and then a second gear right. Then a
really tight 2nd gear left hander which sort of surprises you because it
doesn't initially look like the corner is going to be that tight. I used to
slide off into the grass all the time here and miss out the next 2nd gear
right hander (in the Kallenhard bit), whcih meant the lap didn't count.
You'll soon learn where the problem corners are at the ring, then it's just
a case of remembering when you get there.

ahh yes, and in a race u would be blackflagged for such an excursion

How do you do that? I'd like to change the grids on my servers....

And in a race I'd gladly take the stop and go penalty and return to the
track afterwards, rather than have the whole lap discounted.

Besides, in most of these unintentional "excursions" I'd be taking off my
helmet and waiting for the tow truck to remove my car from the fenceline.

Yes, this is ringing a bell now ;-) Thanks for the answer. I feel a little
dumb now since that never crossed my mind as the reason.

However, I'm still not sure why I've been seeing it at Rouen -- does just
running up on the curb or getting the outside wheels a little off the track
coming out of a turn cause it as well?

Ok, Martyn told me how. Copy the grids from the VROC\WINVROC\grids. Rename
the track.ini file in each GPL directory. Copy the trackol8.ini file from the
VROC directory to it's corresponding GPL directory, and rename to track.ini.
I probably didn't explain that very well...

I've noticed that the sections you will get black-flagged for at Ring are
the ones with red signposts with a black X on them. Look for them. Can't
recall whether those exist at Rouen.
