Cable Upside Bandwidth Increasing?

I grabbed this bit off a ZDNet News release today........seems we have some
"hope" for the future of individual race hosting on home-based cable
systems.  That's the good news!  The bad news is its probably 2 years away.

"A new cable Internet standard slated to be finalized later this year could
boost cable modem speeds, clearing the way for a raft of new services.
Denver-based CableLabs, the cable industry's research and development arm,
announced recently that it will certify a new version of DOCSIS (Data Over
Cable Service Interface Specification), the technology protocol cable
operators use to deliver high-speed Net access using cable modems.

The latest version, which will be called DOCSIS 2.0, significantly increases
cable bandwidth, or network capacity, particularly for so-called upstream
transmissions, according to CableLabs. The standard, which will be finished
by year's end, is designed to triple the speed at which cable modem users
may send data and Internet traffic. But equipment--certified as being based
on the standard--is unlikely to be ready for more than a year, some analysts
say."

But latency is more than issue than throughput :)

Tiered cable packages are being tested here in NC. (Time Warner "Road
Runner" cable). There is going to be a 4X2 package available apparently.
(4Mb down/2Mb up). Requires a router and is intended for businesses at
approx $499 a month.

Businesses can already get that here in Cincy.

We've got a couple of new housing developments that are wiring fiber
connections right up to the homes.  Methinks that should provide all the
bandwidth a serious sim-racer needs.  Now all I need is a couple of hundred
thousand Bucks to afford such a house...:)

I read something about this elsewhere yesterday.  DOCSIS 2.0 makes use (in
part) of S-CDMA to increase speed.

Shaw Cable in Canada is a full S-CDMA (Terayon equipment) system without
DOCSIS 1, 2 or ***y 3...

The modems have  a theoretical max of 45Mbps... if only I could convince
them to let me have that speed

:-)

Tom, just a question.  I have a cable modem (AT & T *** Surfer) and have
hosted races with up to 10-12 friends (local) just using my ip address (not
running through papy) without a hitch.  Is this what your talking about?  Am I
just lucky or is there something I'm missing.

No Michael....you are not "lucky".....that sounds about right for a cable
connection "race host."

I don't recall the exact numbers (maybe someone can refresh or confirm this
information???) but it takes about 12 KB upside bandwidth per client in N4
(client is a person joining a race).  With a cable upside limit of 128 KB
(theoretical....it actually is about 120KB or so)....that means an N4 host
server on such a system could handle about 10-12 clients (race
participants).  Much more than that and the connection stability for all
clients starts to deteriorate rapidly.

Is that about right....all you MP guru's out there?

Tom

Depends on the cable system.  The ComCast nodes in SE Michigan that were
formerly MediaOne nodes have kept MediaOne's 300 kb upstream rate.  I
have confirmed this numerous times with test uploads.  Not sure what
other areas have.

How did you test that?  I considered Comcast, but I'm going with Ameritech for
now.  I'm curious what kind of speeds I'll get...

week, to 128k up.
I'm on an older part of the city net and get 1.5mbs to1.8mbs
downstream...they SAY that sometime next year, they will break up my node
into 3rds and I should start getting 2 to 3 mbps

the easist way to check it was with napster.  Have a cable user dload a
song from you and watch it peak at 11 or 12 kbs  while you are dloading a
mp3 at 100+ kbs.
