GP2 & ICR2 questions

by Toni Hilakar » Mon, 22 Jul 1996 04:00:00

Hello!

I'm Toni Hilakari from Finland and haven't posted here before. I have played
racing sims since -83 and I'm pretty good with some of then.
Currently I play GP1 (getting my GP2 tomorrow), ICRII and Nascar2, I like all 3
so my comment and questions will be about any of them.
My strong area is GP1, I'm happy there is GP editor around so I have been able
to give other teams more power, it would have been dull whitout it (finishing 2
laps ahead of everybody else in for example Monaco isn't fun anymore, heard GP2
is more difficult?)

Well, to the point:

- How can I get Nascar2 Tracks to ICR II ? Need some special software ?
  - I red the ICR I manual but I haven't touched ICR II one, I didn't
even know it's possible before reading about it here
- Is it possible to import/convert ICRII tracks -> Nascar2 too ?

- any experience about GP2 and Cyrix 6x86 P-150
it has diffirent maths-unit than Pentium so does it have any effect ?
- anyone tried it with P150 yet ?
- I haven't got steering wheel/pedals yet, so is it more fun to play GP2
than with keyboard or Joystick ? Do I need the wheel-thing to be
competitive with the fastest of you, does it make one faster than the
  conventional controllers ?

PS. I'd really hope they would stop making those money-waste "sims" like NFS, I
hate when they wait you around the corner after a spin.

Greetings
Toni

First of all Welcome.  And before things get out of hand (I just know
some joker is going to go for it).  When you mention NASCAR2 you really
mean NASCAR.  NASCAR2 isn't due out until November 1996.

You should be able find everything you need for the above at:
        http://www.ukps.com/thepits/
Which is one of the foremost sites for utilities and "do-hickeys" for
the die-hard racing sim fan.

The math-unit (fpu) should have no effect on GP2.  From everything I
have heard GP2 does not do any floating-point math.

Hi!

Thanks, yes you are right. I wasn't thinking, it's Nascar, not v.2.

Maybe I should cut down my racing, it's might be effecting my brain.

I truly hope there isn't lots of jokers here who are going to comment every mistake me or
someone else makes. It would be nice if there was one newsgroup where one could talk about our
"serious hobby" without having to worry about every word.

Everyone should remember, that people here are from every corner of the planet and not everyone
has a perfect skill in english language (and no-one knows all about everything either).

Well, so much about the serious business.

Lets all go racing ! (first I'll go check out that web-site you mentioned).

Greetings
Toni

Hi Toni !

Welcome to r.a.s !

Definitely !

[Nascar & ICR questions skipped - since I don't have any of 'em]

Yup ! My machine is equipped with a P150 - 16MB RAM - ET4000 W32p 2MB
and I have to turno down some details to get a smooth SVGA frame rate
(processor occupancy 80-100%), namely sky, tracks, sand trap and some
others I can't remember now. However, I'm pleased even with VGA even
if someone might disagree ;->

A friend of mine build a similar device for me using a flight-sim like
joystick (it's the one with 4 fire buttons - 2 on the front, 2 on the
rear - I use the rear ones so I can simulate the gear change mechanism
actually used in F1) and a piano volume pedal (sp?) to brake/accel and
I have to say that once you get used to it it's very unlikely that you
could get back to the keys, especially when you have all the help
options turned off (brake, gear, track control and so on). I must
admit however that before getting used to the wheel/pedal set I
had better performances with the keyboard.

I did take a look at it some times ago and it wasn't that bad.

Best,
Roberto

Now that would be Utopia... but it'll never happen! r.a.s. wouldn't be
the same without the ***s!

Anyway, Hi Toni, come on in and enjoy yourself. Just ignore anyone who's
being a jerk - in the words of the prophet, 'Shit Happens'.
