GPL Flickering mirrors - remedy?

You need to hit the ADVANCED button in the display properties and then hit
the Creative Labs tab, then ADDITIONAL PROPERTIES or whatever.  Then, choose
the OpenGL tab.  It should be in there.  I've tried 3.68 NVIDIA reference
and Creative Labs.  No significant difference.  The reference ones are a
little faster but you won't notice the difference in GPL.

GPL Flickering mirrors - remedy?

by Jeff » Sun, 04 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Hi,
I'm using the OpenGL patch  for GPL  and I've seen posts saying 'set
the opengl buffering to use block transfer'? I'm using Cl's drivers and
don't see any such control option (or at least one that even sounds like
this)?
Do I have to use an Nvidia ref driver to get it, and if so which ones are
recommended?

Thanks in advance for any info sent my way.

Hmmm. I don't use creative's drivers but i would expect in the openGL
settings there would be a block transfer option (the gamelauncher
would be great for this as block transfer kills performance in games
like quake3). As for nvidia reference drivers do not use the 5.xxs
instead any 3.xx should work. Most people install 5.16 or 5.22 and
then copy the nvopengl file to the gpl directory. This causes the
5.22s or whatever to run everything except gpl which will run on (in
my case) the 3.68s. With the nv reference drivers the block transfer
setting is settings-->advanced-->geforce-->opengl (i hope i got that
right; i'm at work right now].

GPL Flickering mirrors - remedy?

Nvidia reference drivers are probably a better idea regardless.
I'm using 2.08 and a lot of people find them the most stable, but you have to
do the mirror fix in the registry. I think any thing above 2.08 lets you do it
the advanced settings page. You may be able to do the mirror fix in the
registry with your current drivers. Here's copies of a couple old posts that
explain how to do the fix.

Subject: How to fix GPL mirrors with any Nvidia driver

I just got the GPL demo yesterday and after seeing how good it is, I
plan on buying the game.  There was a problem with the cars' mirrors
though, which I've learned has been a long-time issue with the tnt/tnt2
cards.  I searched the internet for a solution and came across a message
here about using the 3.53 reference drivers with the "Use Block
Transfer" setting to fix the problem, which works perfectly.  The only
problem is that those drivers suck hehe.  I wanted to know how to enable
that setting with the 2.08 drivers (the best ones imo), and discovered
that this fix can be applied to any driver version by simply changing
the value of the "FlippingControl" setting in the registry to "0".

Depending on the driver version, this setting can be found in

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\RIVA TNT\OpenGL], or

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0001\NVidia
\OpenGL]

When doing a fresh install, the settings won't appear in the registry
until an opengl game is run once.

You'll probably use the second path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0001\NVid
ia\OpenGL

Keep in mind, that the 0001 could be 0000 or 0002 or whatever, depending on
the number of cards you HAVE or the number of drivers you HAD installed.
When you open the folder, look on the right side of the split screen for
"FlippingControl".  Double click it and a box will open. Type 0 in the box
and close the registry (just hit the x to close the window). It
automatically saves the changes. Generally you don't have to reboot, but you
may have to.
