Need advice on a wheel/joystick

by tamp » Tue, 20 Jul 1999 04:00:00

after playing GPL for 3 days with a joystick that likes to spike and drift
allover the place my impatience got the best of me and i cracked the handle
in half. So now I need something to drive with. I dont know how much money
i'm willing to spend. I got a MSFF wheel but returned it because i almost
broke that in half too. I think I need one of those custom wheels but they
are really expensive. Maybe I could get a stick or wheel that is REALLY
cheap and get a high end wheel in a while... what does anyone recommend?

Try a TSW. They are very nice, start at about $220, and most importantly,
are made of steel. :)

You can also get the El Cheapo Compusa wheel which normally is around
$30 but every 2 weeks or so it goes on sale for $15. This has peddles
for throttle and braking and works surprisingly well. I got one, and
got it to work with my CH pro pedals that I acquired a little later.
The advantage for you might be that the compusa wheel attaches to your
desk with sucking plastic thingies (don't know the exact english word
for these) which are not too solid. So if ever you would vent your
frustration the wheel will come loose, not allowing you to destroy it
;-)
Plus for the price you can always get three or four if/when they are
cheap, to hold you over until the next time that they go on sale.

The TSW is but if you really want a Top quality wheel I would suggest the SRC!
It is Stainless steel and aluminum. I just had the chance among 20 other sim
racers on ten to compare the SRC to an ECCI CDS 5000 (1200 buck +) system. The
SRC won hands down this is the best wheel that I have ever tried or have seen!
They start at around 425.00 but have a lifetime warrenty. I bought the SRC had
carried it 3000 miles to get it home!

Forgot to mention that the SCR has a clutch pedal option (among other options).
Works great for GPL. it also comes with a dual/single swith so you will have no
problems with any games1

Know what you mean, I bought an FF wheel back in January and the only 2
games that I had that used FF were NFSIII and SODA.  Anyway I had only
had the damn thing about a month and was playing SODA, went into a
corner and the wheel was trying to pull left but I wanted to keep
steering right... unfortunately I won, the FF forces suddenly
disappeared and the vehicle veered off the track. :-(

So I went to get back on track but the damned vehicle would only go
round in circles.  In the heat of battle this did not go down too well
so I gave the wheel a couple more hefty full locks, there was this
snappy-cracky sound, and that was its end - the wheel now span on its
axis freely... oops!

Since then I've been using a joystick and happy with it, but what with
all this talk of FF on GPL I may have to think again.
