N2-wheel or joystick mode for wheel users

The subject recently came up on the NASS offline league mail list
concerning the use of JOYSTICK mode for wheel users for controller config.
The claim is that Papy got their wires crossed, and that WHEEL mode is
for joystick users, and vice versa. What do you self-proclaimed experts
think?

Some wheel users prefer the greater non-linearity of the "joystick"
(nee "non-linear") to the near linearity of the "wheel" (nee "linear")
mode. (I can't imagine a stick user would be happy with "wheel", but
they could try it I guess.)

Use whichever you like; the wheel mode is closer to linear (half
deflection gets you close to half steering angle, quarter gets you
quarter, etc); the stick model is less sensitive across the center
(full deflection gives full steering angle, but half might give 3/8ths
and 1/4 deflection might give 1/8, etc) This accounts for the fact
that it's harder to make subtle inputs near the center of a joystick.

No inherent performance advantage or penalty to either input method.
