Yup, and if you like flight sims so much you should get a pair of CH Pedals.
They can be used for both rudder control in flight sims and as the pedals
for racing.

You could move shifting to the keyboard.

If I remember correctly, Mike Laskey (one of GPL's beta testers) uses
(or, at least used to use) just a stick, and he's plenty fast.  Quite a
mad man, actually.

I'm using a stick as well.

Throttle...stick forward,
brake, stick backwards,
Shift up button 1 ---finger
shift down button 2, ---thumb
steering....pretty obvious.

This is really the only practical solution owing to the fact that
directional and steering input really has to be done by analogue control in
GPL, as opposed to say Nascar 2 where you can get away with on/off switches.
It takes some getting used to when you have to pull back slightly in order
to change gear, especially when you have to do this in a long bend and have
to hold a constant radius at the same time. My advice to you is to throw
away all the aids and be prepared to crash a lot for a week or so. It might
sound a painful prospect but ultimately, there is no gain without pain. It
is the only way you will ever find any real speed. Remember that GPL needs a
lot of time invested in it in order to get any real returns. Don't go
looking for a free ride, whatever controller you use.

I'm wondering of those here that use the joystick for GPL,

Glenn, I would recommend that if you have the money, get a
joy that is optically read. There is no drifting with it,
and it never needs to be calibrated, it does it alone as
windows boots up. And if you get Microsoft (hate the
company - but their *** stuff is superb) Sidewinder 3d
pro or precision pro.

I would advise AGAINST shifting using buttons on the stick -
shift with the buttons on the bas of the controler, ant that
way you are not disturbing the balance of the car as you are
shifting. I hold the stick with only two fingers of my fight
hand, and use the left on the bas for shifting and holding
the base. The outer edge of my palm also rests on the base
of the controller, so I move the stick VERY precisely, using
just a few fingers, and I find it very controlable.

And Sidwinder for Falcon 4.0 is GREAT too  -  well, the
developement team is using it!

The MS Sidewinder Pro is a good joystick for driving. I used one for TOCA
and it worked well.

Throttle (forward) and Brake (back), for shifting I alternated between the
two thumb buttons on the side of the joystick and two of the four buttons on
the base.

I liked the latter because it felt awkward to do everything with one hand.

My arm is aching after a hour on the joystick....
But I agree; you learn to drive (and brake) using a stick
