SoundBlaster 32 PnP + ICR II?

by -Keating,R. » Tue, 07 May 1996 04:00:00

I am thinking of getting a SoundBlaster 32 PnP but I want to make sure
that it will work with the current version of ICR II and NASCAR.  I've
heard that some "plug and play" components do not work in DOS (outside
of Windows95) since they have no jumpers to tell DOS how they are set.

Does anyone use a SoundBlaster 32 PnP (or a 16 PnP) with ICR II or NASCAR?
Does it work 100% in these sims?  Any special setup needed?

Thanks,

I'm running a PnP 32 in my setup, and it works just fine, as long as you
use the AWE32 driver. It's been a while, but I seem to recall an
addendum to the manual regarding AWE32 settings. I also seem to recall
the setup being quite the pain, but my rig was brand new at the time,
came loaded with Win95, and I loate to read manuals, so the problems
were most likely of my own creation. I believe there's some postings
about the card (or at least the AWE32) in the tech support area of the
Papyrus website. BTW, don't get your hopes up: all the audio is 8-bit
16k streamed sampling, including the music at the top, so it will sound
just as foul on this card as on any other.

This card will work fine, I know from personal experience. You will
need a DOS configuration manager, either the Intel CM or Creatives. I
recomend Creatives. If the card you buy does not come with it, you can
get it from CREAF.COM, Creatives FTP site.

That is kind of misleading Russell.  Actually, the cards do work outside
of the win95 environment, its just that everything is no longer automatic.
Autoexec.bat and config.sys modifications need to be made to make them
recognizable.  The soundblaster has been soft-configured for a while now.
Its just that win95 doesn't do this automatically for you when doing a
dual-boot to dos.  You must configure it just like you were using standard
DOS.
