Help! Can't install LWFF on AMD Athlon!!!!!

I spent every penny I had on a 1GHz AMD Athlon and when I try to install my
LWFF wheel, it always freezes up my system at the point when it tries to detect
the controller.  And it freezes up the system so bad I have to RECOVER the
whole system.

I have tried to install a Guillemot Ferrari wheel, but that messes up my modem
so that it no longer works!

Now I've got the computer, BUT NO CONTROLLERS.  Can anybody help?
