NFS3 & INTERNET...ANYONE MAKE IT WORK????

A friend  and I have been trying to get NFS III to connect through the
internet  but wwhen it connects it's so slow we can't race. We've played
Quake,Quake2,Combat Flight sim,NASCAR 1999,and  others with no problem thats
why we can't figure out why NFS III won't work.
Any thoughts??
