Multiplayer problems...Help

My brother and I are trying to Multiplayer race, and were having
problems getting connected.

We can both dial each other but when the other answers it says it
cannot initialize modem.
He has a Robotics Sportster and I have an IBM MWAVE.
His modem is set at COM2, IRQ3, 19200.
Mine is set at COM1,IRQ4,19200.
Question:  Do we both have to have the same INIT string?
           I thought we did.....
Why can we both dial each other but when the other picks up it cannot
Initialize the modem...

Any help much appreciated!!!!

No, you each need the specific INIT string for your particular Modem.  Both
modems need data compression (hardware), error detection, and error
corrections turned off in the INIT string.  For your IBM MWAVE you will
need to construct a INIT string that turns off those features (see your
modem's manual or contact IBM).

For the Sportster try: at&f^m~~~at&c1&d2&k0&m0&n6&a0^m

Also, you may want to try reducing the Baud rate to 9600 (it has no real
effect on gameplay but may give a more reliable connection).
