CD-ROM help!!!!

by Nick Baltuc » Thu, 24 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Hello everyone!

Me and my dad had just purchased an Atlas 16x CD-ROm to replace our old
single-speed which is just a tad out of date.  After spending most of
the night on it, my dad could never get it to work.  So a few nights
later he went back to work on it and 10 minutes later it worked.  So,
yesterday I got ICR2, I could'nt wait to play it but when we put it in,
the CD-ROM drive would not work!  My dad said it may be too fast for our
486 but I think if it worked before it'll work again.  Can somebody help
me with this problem?  Thanks  :o)

Hi Nick
Your dad could be right in a way, if your 486 has an enhanced IDE
controller, not many had as standard, it should work fine, but if it
only has a standard IDE controller it probobly will not work properly.
If your machine has a bigger harddrive than 528 MB and runs this in so
called LBA mode without an overlay driver, your machine has an enhanced
IDE controller. This is not a big problem though, as aftermarket EIDE
controllers are cheap and fairly easy to install. I`m assuming here that
you have checked the jumper settings on both your harddrive(some disks
have a setting for "slave present") and your CD-ROM.
