Two things that stood out in GameSpot's awards:

1. "The best game nobody played": Battlezone. I can only agree with
that. There was already discussion about how depressing it is a great
game like this sold so poorly.

2. "The best driving game": Need For Speed III. Irk! Other nominees
were Ubisof't F1RS and Grand Prix Legends, and NFS3 beat them both?
Oh well, maybe NFS3 has more mass appeal...

Sort of figures, anyone can drive NFS3 right out of the box.  GPL takes
lots of time.  Personally, I really liked F1RS, but you had to do a lot
of practicing on that one too.

I have the game and only played through half of it. The game is extremely
well done but there is something about it that just didn't grab me like
some games do.  If I had to pinpoint the main problem, I think the
sluggish vehicle control is what turned me off a tad too much. If the
vehicles were controllable and snappy like say Q2, then I think I would
have totally loved the game but then the realism would be gone of course.

Hell no!  Personally, Viper Racing gets my best driving game vote.

Well..

They are called GAMESpot's..

It they would had been named SIMSpot's it would had been a blasphemy, but
that company is obviously targeting the mass market.  I would agree with
NFS3, who is an excellent arcade racing game.

Battlezone came OEM with my Voodoo2 card.  Great game, but I quit halfway
through.  Why?  I'll admit it--it's too dang hard!!  I've never been much
into warfare strategy, but the infusion of that into action was a blast.  It
was just too much for my little pea-brain to process.  "Blow up
tanks...build gun tower...uhh...fish or cut bait?"

Best overlooked game after BZ?  Gotta be G-Police.  Best 3d-accelerated
beveage coaster I've ever owned.

I liked most of their choices, though I dont know if I would have picked
Grim Fandango for best game (though it is a GREAT game)... I was emailing
a friend about some of the new games I have, and mentioned Grim
actually... he hated the soundtrack in the demo.  Guess it just shows
people have completely different opinions.
Never played Battlezone, so I cant comment on that.  I do hear it's good
though.
As far as best driving game goes, you are right, NFS3 won because it has
the most mass appeal.  GPL is way too difficult for the casual computer
driver, and F1RS was pretty obscure I think among most mainstream
gamers.  Plus, of all of those, I think NFS is the most fun.  GPL would
be for me, but I suck at it.

I think the problem is most action gamers are turned off by the
strategy micro-managment element. I know I was. I sue complicated
comuter programs at work all day - by the time I'm turning to playtime
I want something simple!

Yeah, that's pathetic. Viper Racing was also 1000 times the game NFS3
was. NFS3 lasted all of about a week on my hard drive.

Just because traffic is bad in your area, I wouldn't necessarily seek a

In that case they shouldn't have entered GPL and F1RS as nominees at
all, if they are not games. Preferably they should have added another
category, that is one for arcade driving games and another for sims.

What will they do next? Say G-Police is better helicopter game than
Longbow 2 because G-Police is easier to play for a beginner?

Well, it's just someone's opinion, and we all know how little we share
each others opinions! But I don't think they had enough categories.
They spent half the introduction talking about all these excellent
games released into each genre, plus games which crossed genres, but
they didn't really accommodate them. For example, while Half Life is
probably the best action game, I was disappointed to see Thief come
away with only nominations and no award - but where does Thief fit?
It's hardly an action game next to Half Life, yet it's not a
simulation or adventure. More of an action-adventure, perhaps? It was
certainly far more innovative and original than Half-Life yet in some
ways Half-Life provides more visceral fun, in other ways Thief's
atmosphere is unbeatable and more immersive.

Grand Prix Legends is another - to compare it with NFS3 doesn't make
sense. It's a game you have to play a lot of in order to get anything
of out it, whereas NFS3 is the opposite. Serious game vs. arcade game,
but both are fun overall. Mass appeals wins, but the better game...?

        Bleech.

Looks like Blizzard slipped them some cash. Starcraft won way to
many awards. To even think it was nominated for Game of the Year, and
Baldur's Gate wasn't shows something was wrong.

Yes, like your taste  :)

Baldur's Gate was out for less than two weeks of the year. That might
have had something to do with it.

I have a question for Starcraft haters though....  was there *any*
other RTS game worth playing in the last year?  I seriously can't
think of one.

Pretty hard to be game of the year if you only had about 10 days to
play it in 98,  wait and see in 99 I am sure it will win a ton of them
