No, there were no <1998> RTS games that were better than Starcraft. However,
two <1997> games were more enjoyable to play during 1998 - Total
Annihilation and Age of Empires.

Total Annihilation?  Ages of the Empires?

But they were released in 1997, prohibiting them from 1998 awards :)

To you, and many, perhaps...  however, I did not like TA one bit. They
way overdid the units.  Way too many.  Age of Empires had horrible
pathfinding initially... I haven't loaded it up since the patch.

I still think Starcraft is a more complete *game*.  Your strategy and
style of play is completely different between the races. By climbing
up tech trees in different ways, your strategies even within a race
are numerous and exciting.

I've played tons of RTS since Warcraft, and frankly, I can't imagine
any of them being able to compare to Starcraft.

Oh well, at least GameSpot agrees with me :)

Agreed!  IMO, Starrcraft was a huge seller because Blizzard made the game.
The game, in and of itself, was far from spectacular.  Amazing what a name
can do for a product...
