Sometimes there are "multiple" hardware entries in the Device Manager,
but they do not show up unless you boot Windows in Safe Mode. Even
though you removed the soundcard drivers, unless you go into Safe Mode,
there may still be a phantom installation.
Also you may want to try running the Win95 Setup program in the "verify"
mode which should only attempt to replace corrupted files or missing
files.

The solution to that problem is far more simple:
A file called joy.cpl is missing from your windows\system directory.
Normally windows keeps a copy of it in the windows\system\backup
directory, copy it to windows\system. If for some reason it's not
there you can extract it from the .cab files on the cd. Type
extract /? at the command prompt for options on how to extract files.
