Here's our first 500K celebration article of the day. Stefan Petrovic has
put some more time in (dare I say three full weeks?) with the ACT LABS RS
Shifter after his First Hour Quick Take and has now delivered a full-blown
review to the High Gear Headquarters. Does he like this product?

"There it was, the RS Shifter. I've been bugging the guys over at ACT LABS
about this product ever since April, they must be really glad to get rid of
me for a while now. They've probably banned all incoming mails from
simracingnews.com :)"

Hmmm...That didn't quite answer your question, right? But you can really
find out if it's any good, right at
http://www.racesimcentral.net/!

It looks great, but does it only work with  the ACT LABS wheel?

Hello Andre,

Yes, the ACT LABS Force RS Shifter only works with the ACT LABS Racing
System.  All of our products are designed to be "future proof,"
meaning they can be upgraded or enhanced via add ons.  This is
facilitated by our unique cartridge system.  It is not possible for
our competitors' wheels to add an after market shifter (or other
expansion products) as they are closed systems.

That's until another manufacturer makes a standalone shifter that simply
plugs into the other USB port, and utilizes a combination software profiler
to allow you to "combine" wheel and shifter as one controller in the game...
that works on ALL wheels universally ;) I know PDPI already accomplished
this combination software on the L4 with JoyMap, and from the sounds of
it... people are using it a lot for many things like Logi Wheel and CH
Pedals, etc. :)

Keep in mind that your Shifter simply assumes button assignments from the
wheel, and the game companies implement keystroke commands for particular
gears. Theoretically... if it's ported to use the AL Shifter... another
Shifter (stand-alone) could also utilize the same button assignments and
work flawlessly with all other wheels on the market... making it a more
desireable buy overall... This is because the combination software reports
the two controllers as one (you also have control over which buttons/axis do
what), so the game doesn't even know that there are two controllers doing
the work as one.

So to say that other wheels are "closed systems" in a gross misstatement.
But don't worry about PDPI  making a Shifter like yours.... almost all real
racing series down to the lowest level use sequential shifters now
anyways... However... I find your Shifter a ton of fun to use (in all
honesty).

Cheers,

Shumi

Could you please use the USENET standard when you do reply?
That is, place Re: before the header, instead of a new header. Your
postings are a PITA to place in context.

There are a lot of people who can't reply properly these days....

Hi Raymond,
That upgrade option is a wonderfull idea, whish more hardware would
have this feature. Too bad it doesn't work with other hardware, the
shifter really looks great, but I don't want to get rid of my LWFF...

Funny..... I show threaded posts, and have NO problem putting them in
context (lots of times this happens on other posts too). I AM replying
properly since it showed up EXACTLY like I wanted it to....

If you can't follow simple indented threads..... perhaps you should look
into a new Newsreader and quit telling me what I can and can't do.....

Everyone's a self appointed "President of Net Etiquette" these days.....
sheesh...

 Cheers,

Shumi

Many newsreaders - including Agent, probably the most widely used one
on the planet - automatically create a new thread when the subject
changes. So for many users, when you change the subject you create a
new, separate thread that is not in context.

Yeah, Joe is right here....only for Outlook users, like Shumi, the
replies makes sense....for others they look a bit silly...

Notice the subject, and please accept my apologies. At the same time I'd
like to thank you, and perhaps even share in your frustration. I couldn't
figure it out... but Agent always seemed so screwed up when I viewed News in
it, and now I have my answer. I do use Outlook, and by the sounds of it... I
should stick with it (although it's not perfect admittedly... lost my entire
archive of news on this exact NG 2 weeks ago... missing some replies in the
process).

I'll keep it in mind next time I reply :)

Cheers,

Shumi

Actually, Agent (not Free Agent) can handle this fine.

From Options / General Preferences / Message List:
 - check "Enable threading by subject"
 - don't check "Start a new thread when follow up subject changes"

This seems to cater for most of the problems caused by people using
newsreaders which don't conform to the standards ;-)

Richard

Hey Andre,
You should try to sell the Logi wheel.  I did.  Only thing is, when you sell
it, don't let anyone see the ACT LABS wheel and shifter combo.  :)  If you
let them play with the Shifter, you will never rid if it!

Thanks, Richard, I didn't know that.

Thanks for your consideration Shumi! :-)

I love Agent, or rather, I'm ***ed to it. It's organization of
groups, threads, and messages is unparalleled. That's why most Agent
users continue to use the product for years. Everyone elses user
interfaces just seem so clumsy by comparison (don't even get me
started on web-based forums!).
