OT: Any Advise on Cable Modem/Wireless Network

Hi
I'm considering upgrading to a cable modem and then going wireless to a
second computer in the house.  Any advise on the brand of modems or should I
pay the $4.95 per month from Charter.  How about routers, network cards and
wireless vs wired.  I'm leaning towards Netgear base on a few online reviews
I read.
I haven't raced online yet but may once I get up and running.
Thanks for any help, sorry if the off-topic post offends, but most of you
seem pretty up on the latest technology.

I believe the Motorola Surfboard 4200 gets pretty good reports.
As far as the networking, you might want to check out
http://practicallynetworked.com/

I only have a single computer here, and don't have wireless, but I do use a
Linksys 4 port router and ethernet card, and have had no problems with them.

I can't recomend any modems...mine is too old, but think for a
moment...whatever the cable company is 'giving' you will most likely be a
Bargain priced modem.  Just make sure when you get a cable modem it is
DOCSIS compliant.  That is the current protocol for cable modems.

Buy a modem; I've had great luck with Motorolas.  You'll eventually be with
the cable company long enough to have more than paid off a modem, and even
if not, you can sell the modem on eBay and get money back.  You can't get
the $5/month back from the company, though.

Regarding wireless, though; I've never tried to set it up, but I've never
heard a success story from someone using it as a home network.  IMO, save
money, take some time, and get a MUCH better end result by wiring the house
with CAT5.  It's really not that hard, and especially if you do more than
just two computers, it's much cheaper than $70+ per PC for wireless.

I have used both Motorola and RCA modems and have never had any problems
with either.
I have also used Linksys and SMC wireless routers and find the Linksys
easier to set-up overall.
If you plan to host any on-line racing, the Linksys is the way to go.
As for wireless cards, I have found that my SMC is the oldest and worst,
with my D-Link, Linksys, and Netgear all work about the same.
I use an Orinco at work which works great, but also costs more than the
rest.

A few things to think about...

If it is easy to run some CAT5 wire to the PC locations, it will be better
in the long run.
The speed of a wired network is a lot faster and more reliable than WIFI.
With a wireless setup, you may get interference from some 2.4GHz phones and
things such as that.
I went wireless because I am lazy and already had the equipment at work.

Even with all of the kids on line at the same time, I usually do not have
any problems racing online.

Hope this helps..

Yeah, if you live in a big city like NY, don't go wireless.  It isn't a
security issue (altho I see the NSA has the black helos scanning *our*
airwaves inside the Beltway), it's a RFI problem.

Yeah, I have the Motorola Surfboard SB4200.  It has worked just fine.  I had
a Linksys, but took it back for a reason I don't remember.

The SB4200 was a safe choice for me because it's what my provider has
settled on for thier own use.

I paid $60 after rebate.

BTW... How many know that there is a built-in 'status' page in most cable
modems?  You can't change anything, but you can see the logs and how the
modem has configured itself in most cases.

In your browser, go to 192.168.100.1.

Each manufacturers page is different so there's no guarantee what, if
anything, will be there.

$5 a month?

LOL!

Cox Cable in Northern ***ia charges FIF*** $$$ a month for their modem
rental.

Buying an SB4200 for $60 was a no brainer for me :)

$5 a month was for the first poster.  Back home, I'd have to pay about $10
or $15 easy...they keep jacking the price up...Cox in Arizona, of course. :P

Bragger. ;)  I paid nearly twice that for my two older Surfboards a year and
two back respectively (setting up two different houses with Cox).

Yeah, I waited until they hit a pay-off point of 6 months.  I got lucky and
caught a rebate which set the pay-off at 4 months.

These things were $200 not much over a year ago!
