Simple answer: Assign it to the pedal you prefer

That is indeed the obvious answer :-) Perhaps I should have stated my
question differently. Let me try again...

Does a 'regular' race car, that uses paddle shifters, usually have the
up-shift paddle on the right or the left side, or does this differ per
driver/car?

Yes it does differ per driver/car, but AFAIK most have the up-shift on the
right-hand side.

It can be programmed either way in a real F1 car, although most use up shift
on the right.  However, the real cars don't use paddles but buttons.  There
is a paddle clutch, but we don't need to worry about that for your purposes.

The real answer, as others have already stated, is to use whichever is more
comfortable for you.

Marc.

I believe that real life would be the same as sims. The driver can choose
and put it on what ever side he prefers.

I put the upshift on the right in my "real" racecar because I figured with an H pattern
shifter you move it to the right for selecting higher gears. So I use the right for
upshift in racing sims also.

Johan,

I believe the correct settings is the right paddle is assigned up shift
and the left paddle down shift.

Excuse me, but the real cars do use paddles....in F1 anyway. The buttons
on F1 wheels perform various other functions, but gearchange and clutch
are on paddles.

No comment, but I'm very amused about the discussion about this

I haven't been following this, but maybe the person was asking because he'd
like to have it setup the same way as real racers do.
for example, on my nascar pro, I have shift up (push forward) and shift down
(pull back).  My friend who races real cars can never drive at my house
because apparently in real life, they use the opposite directions.  (My way
conflicts with the g-forces in the car making it more difficult.)

Your friend is right, but this is only for a shifter set-up.  If he has paddles
it doesn't really apply.  Thanks for the info though.

What really amazes me is that newer roadcars with automatic transmissions have
also an option to use the shifter as a sequential transmission similar to most
racecars. The stupid thing is that you have to push forward to gear up. The
resarch must be really really bad to make a solution like this, and the worst
this is that many manufacturers have it this way. Plain stupid....
