NR2003 - AI pace at track types?

by Peter Ive » Wed, 11 Feb 2004 07:12:12

Hi all,

I've recently had a wee bit more time to spend simming and have used it
to get myself back up to speed with NR2003 by starting a season or 2
against the AI, for now.

Having discarded several seasons for the AI being too slow I am now
about a 3rd of the way through a season with the AI set at 96%, but have
the auto adjusting setting OFF for the AI.

Now, what I'm finding is that, depending on the track type, the AI
ability varies compared to my own ability and wondered if others here
had also noticed anything similar.

NOTE:  I'm using the FAST SETUPS for all sessions unless where stated,
but my own findings are:

Short Track:  Mid-pack on qualifying, but struggle to hang on to them
during the race and tyres go off quicker than their's, but that could
just be a bad setup.

Speedways:  Up either on poll or near front in qualifying and can kick
their butts in the race.

SuperSpeedways:  Not a chance with fast setups for qualifying obviously.
Have had to go over to Jasper setups for the race otherwise I just drift
off the back.

Still to try the road courses.

Like I say, there appears to be a general trend depending on the track
type, but it could just be that I'm more geared towards speedways than
the other 2 types of courses.  If others have found this, then it may be
time to start adjusting AI performance levels down a bit depending on
type of track, but if it's me then I'm just going to have to work on my
driving style.

Cheers in advance.

I assume that you have the "adaptive speed control" set to "off". I believe
that the AI cars run with you to some extent much like GPL.
I generally set the AI strength 1 or 2 % higher than my abilities or
setups in order to oush myself and gain speed from somewhere.
If you are running the patched version, go over to
http://www.onlineracin.com/pwf/ and get their setups for all the tracks and
different series. They are a little better and more stable than the "fast"
or "jasper" setups included in the retail version of the sim.
Hope this helps,
Timmy

Yep, its set to off.  Forgot what it was called and said 'auto
adjusting' in my original post.

That's kinda similar to what I'm trying to do.  However, if I up the AI
strength to extend myself at the Speedways, I'm going to be way off the
pace at the Short Tracks and Superspeedways.

Having said that, I don't want to start messing with the settings on the
tracks I'm struggling at if I am just plain bad at them.  If I know that
I'm poor at those tracks at the moment then I'm prepared to work at it
that little harder to try to get myself up to speed.  If I mess with the
tracks settings in order to bring their pace down to mine, despite the
fact that I need to work more on my craft, then I'm less likely to push
myself.

If the AI is just different depending on type of track then I'm prepared
to mess with the track settings to balance things out, knowing that it's
not my driving that is off.

I am running the patched version, but the reason I'm trying to stick
with the fast setup  - with default weather BTW - is because I still
hope to compete in RASCAR.  So, though I could improve things by getting
more stable setups, they would be of no use for RASCAR races.

<snip>

Pete,

AFAIK, in RASCAR, we are going to use the "expert" Cup setups Tim refers to from the PWF link above,
not the "fast" setups that came w/ NR2003.  See:
http://www.schuerkamp.de/zope/rascar/news  , & check the forum.

Yes AI strength varies from track to track. That is the benifiet of the auto
AI %.  It sets your AI% based on your previous races. The downfall is that
for some reason Papy set the default % at 70% so it needs some races to get
it cranked up to where it should. However you can go into your playerrec.ini
file and edit the value.
