What is a sim?

Guest writer John Bodin wonders what it takes for something to qualify as a
"sim," or what qualities does a game have to possess before it can truly be
considered a "sim":

"Put two or more people who like racing sims together in a newsgroup or a
forum and invariably they will tend to discuss the relative merits of this
driving game or that. Once you get that sort of discussion going, it's only
a matter of time before a full-scale debate breaks out over which game is
the better sim, and why it is superior to other titles. Even people who
agree that certain titles represent the pinnacle of driving sim technology
will bitterly disagree about the fine points of other titles, and woe be to
the person who tries to compare any aspect of a NASCAR sim to an F1 sim."

My answer has always been a game that puts realism before gameplay.
