GPL: fps

Hello,

On my system (AMD K6 300 MHz, VooDoo1, 64 MB), I usually get about 18 fps
at full detail level and 800X600 when no other cars are in visual range,
no matter what number of AI cars I am running. Only when the screen turns
to 'snow' I achieve 36 fps.

I wondered which factors influenced my fps, so I turned off the
arms/driving wheel. Nothing changed. I changed resolution to 640X480.
Nothing changed.

Now I wonder whether those 18 fps are some sort of physical barrier I
cannot cross with my system or if there is another factor that uses much
more CPU-time than the factors above.

Does anyone know more??

Greetings, Han

Hmmm

I think it there might be something wrong there. I can get
19-25 FPS out of my P166 mmmx 32 meg EDO and Voodoo 2 12 meg
driving on my on in a race with 8 opponents in 640x480 mode,
only cars in the mirrors and the rest of the graphics set to
about half. You should be doing better than that with your
system. Oh I only have 4 sounds playing at once  rather than
the full 16 as sound is a bit hit on FPS.

I think you are approaching the FPS limit of your CPU and the Voodoo I.

On my K6-2 350, I could get about 19-21 FPS with a Monster 3D

I now get 32-36 fps (sometimes 37, but I thought 36 was the limit??)
with a Voodoo Banshee.

The Voodoo1 can do 36fps in GPL.  That shouldn't be the problem.

Indeed, you may approach an FPS limit quickly in GPL using a Voodoo 1 in
800x600 mode.  I have a Celery 300a o/c'd to 374mhz and couldn't get a
really solid 36FPS with my Monster 3d I if there were many cars about,
etc, etc.

I bought a Monst 3d II and can easily achieve a rock solid 36fps in
800x600 res. in all situations but the starting grid when I have 19 AI
about.   As I often host races I do turn the detail level down to about
1/2 way because AT NO TIME do I want the FPS to drop below 36 if possible
as this can start playing havoc with on line connections.

This has been my experience only between a Voodoo I and a Voodoo II with
all other factors (Ram, CPU, HD, Sound card, Controllers) remaining the
same.

I cannot offer advice in your case, Han, because the drop from 800x600 to
640x480 seemed to make no difference for you.  However, I thought that you
might be interested to know the limitation of the Voodoo I in 800x600.

Cheers,
Gian.

NONONONONO, you lot have it all twisted out of all proportion, i get 18fps
with EVERYTHING turned on max, in 640 x 480, i found after a bit of
changing, all you have to do is turn the sounds heard down to the minimum
and the draw distance down to 1/3 and i can now get 36fps on 800 x 600!

Han, your system should be capable of higher framerates. I have an
iP166MMX running at 250MHz and a VooDoo1, and get 36fps in training
with some less important graphics options turned off.

The VooDoo cards aren't particularly great when it comes to drawing
textures in mirrors. Try this: turn off all the textures in the
mirrors and see what happens. Other options I do without in order to
get high framerates are the quality options and effects, as well as
beveled tires.
