Need For Speed SE - I've got major problems

by Jo » Sat, 06 Jul 1996 04:00:00

I just picked up NFS SE, and I can't get *either* the Win95 nor the
DOS version to work.

I have a P133, SCSI disk & CD-ROM, Soundblaster16, Stealth64 VRAM w2MB
RAM, and a Thrustmaster T2 wheel & pedals.

The DOS version installed Ok, and went through the joystick
configuration Ok, but the gas and brakes don't work right. I can only
go about twenty miles per hour. And even then, thr car/graphics is
bouncing up and down like I'm driving cross-country. Something is
seriously screwed up here. BTW, the original NFS works fine on this
same hardware.

So I installed the WIn95 version, but Win95 can't find my Thrustmaster
(nor any other joystick) when I try to configure it with Add Hardware.
And there are no joystick selections in the manual add hardware
selection screen.

Help!

I had the same problem at first.  There is a file on the CD called JCU.EXE.
It allows you to select pre-set calibrations for many joysticks, including
the T2.

Do you know if it supports CH Virtual Pilot Pro & Pro Pedals? The
first version couldn't handle more than one joystick (needed for the
CH setup).

JCU does have a selection for the CH Virtual Pilot Pro & pedals, but as
far as I can see it still only supports one joystick. I still need to
use the adapter that came with my T2.

I have seen about 6 diffirent messages with about six diffirent
problems people are having with Need for Speed SE.  Please read
the manual, folks.  ALL of these problems are addressed in the
excellent quick reference manual.
I have had no problems with NFSSE.  It runs like a charm on
my Cyrix 150+, #9 771, with 16 megs with everything turned on.
The music is great and has many diffirent selections to choose
from.  The graphics and physics are excellent.  The sounds is
awesome (listen for the dripping water when you are going through
the mine shaft)
This is definitly the slickest, most well put together, FUN game
I have played for awhile.  Everyone around here is ***ed to it.
Doing cookies in a Dodge Viper or catching some air in a Diablo VT
is worth 50 bucks anyday!  :)
Who else thinks the videos for the Diablo and the Viper rock?
I didn't think much of DirectX, until I played this.  The graphics are
definitely up there in playstation range, and I don't have a 3D card.
My two cents.

: Um, we actually do read manuals.  You're one of the lucky ones who
: have no problem with NFSSE but don't expect the other people to have
: the same PC as you do.

Hmm, I read the manual and have no problems either.  Maybe there IS
something to reading?  Yea, that's the ticket.

My manual says nothing about what to do if the VIDEO test isn't offered during
the install or what to do when the modem won't connect.  EA took a perfectly
good and functional game and screwed it up and called the the Special Edition.

I read the manual, and have a setup that permits me to run NFS, Duke
Nukem, Doom, Doom II, and so on and so on--there are no DOS programs I
can't run under my various custom Win95 settings.

When attempting to install NFS-SE under DOS 7, I get 4 lines of the
DOS/4GW message, the screen goes blank, and my computer locks up enough
to require a cold boot.

You people out there having problems running NFS-SE are lucky, I can't
even get the installation program to run!!!

Since there is nothing wrong with my setup, I can only assume that it is
a unique manufacturing error in my CD.

Unfortunately, EA decided to wait until July 3 to mail my copy (though
it was ordered the previous week), so the holiday weekend slow down
screwed timely delivery.  Now, they have failed to respond to my request
for assistance or a replacement in a timely fashion--all necessitated
because I had to order through them to get the ***y upgrade at a still
inflated price.  Of course, as the discussion here as noted, the only
other alternative for NFS owners is to pay full price--not likely for a
couple of minor upgrades.  If I was able to buy NFS II, which is what
should have been released by now, I could have bought it at my local
software outlet, and returned it and be using a functional copy by now.

Anyone else experience this utter lack of functionality?
