Driver demo -- won't launch

by John Bodi » Wed, 11 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I've checked all the threads here on the (unofficial) Driver demo, but I
haven't seen anybody experiencing this problem:

I can run the configuration just fine, and the 3DFx logo pops up and it says
I'm okay.  Then I save the configuration settings and close out the
configuration utility.  Then, when I start up the Driver demo, all I get is
the opening screen.  I can scroll through the various selections (options,
etc.), but when I launch the game, all I get is about 85% of the "rainbow"
progress bar at the bottom of the screen and it locks up.  Does this pause a
REALLY long time, or is it actually locking up on me?  I've waited varying
amounts of time, and after a while I can hear engine sounds, but the
progress bar remains frozen.

My system is:

Windows 98
AMD K6-2 350 (not overclocked)
Intergraph Reactor (Rendition -- 4 MB) (latest driver version w/recommended
bios for Win98 drivers)
Canopus Pure3D (Voodoo 1 -- 6 MB) (latest driver version)
Generic 16 bit sound card
PDPI L4 game card
Best Data 56K data/FAX modem
64 MB RAM

The system's not the best, but it's definitely no slouch, either; it runs
GPL at 36fps on-line -- I have no idea why the Driver demo won't load.

FWIW, I downloaded BOTH of the versions  that I found on the Web
(33817_driverdemo.zip, which was reported to be corrupt, and driverdemo.zip,
which was supposed to be okay).  Same result with both (neither seemed
corrupt).  I have a good, solid, dedicated modem line, and downloads like
this are usually no problem.

Any ideas?

There's something wrong. On my machine, the progress bar fills very
quickly and, after a delay of half a second, the mission begins. Do
you also hear a police siren and a crashing sound? This would indicate
that the mission has begun, but the display does not work.

I think maybe there's an issue with your Canopus card. I would try a
different driver for this card (maybe the 3dfx reference drivers).

Seems as if www.pczone.co.uk fixed the file on their site. I read
several reports today where people downloaded the file without a
problem, but I also know of at least four people (myself included) who
had the same problem (download finishes after 12MB with a broken file)
during the last few days.

I had exactly the same after installing the game (and once more after
playing another game). Restarting my computer did the trick. So by this time
your version may work already...

Restarting did not help.  I've gone this route many multiple times, with no
luck.  Guess I'll just find out about Drive when they release the "official"
demo . . .

:-(

I have exactly the same problem, about 85% it stops loading (the sound runs,
but it doesn't load, and when i ctrl-alt-del it says driver (not
responding). the only thing similar between our systems is the voodoo1 card
(orchid 3dfx with latest drivers), maybe its the drivers we have? I'd try
other drivers and tell you the results, but my friends computer is at my
house, so I just play it on is anyway :)

Sorry I couldn't be more of a help

I had the same prob - try it at a lower resolution - the next one down from
640x480 - worked for me.

Driver demo -- won't launch

I fixed the problem -- I lost my hard drive a couple of weeks ago and had to
re-install everything, and it appears I wasn't using the latest 3DFx drivers
for my Canopus Pure 3D card.  I've been putting off installing my new
Banshee board due to lack of time, but I made time tonight, and now I've got
Driver working.  Now I've got to go through all the old threads and figure
out how to change the options and such to allow me more time to explore.

The Banshee board is GREAT, BTW -- I got a Creative Labs 3D Blaster Banshee
from the CDworld Web site (www.cdworld.com).  It's a PCI version, and it was
$51.97 plus shipping (which was $4.90, I think).  I had wanted an AGP card
to free up an additional PCI slot, so I was a bit disappointed when it
arrived and I found out it was the PCI version (I didn't know it came in a
PCI version -- stupid on my part).  I didn't bother trying to exchange it
because they apparently only carry the PCI version.  I've VERY pleased with
teh board, though.  I'm getting great frame rates -- I thought I was doing
good before, but now EVERYTHING plays more smoothly; Viper Racing, GPL, and
Powerslide are all far more controllable than ever.  I highly recommend this
one for people on a budget.  It makes my AMD K62-350 machine REALLY scream.

Driver demo -- won't launch

by Tapani Kaijanmak » Fri, 13 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hi,
I had the same problem. Driver chance for my voodoo1 did the job.
First I had  glide 2.46 version, no start like described. Then v 2.48, now I
got only green screen. Then to the version 2.42 and everything is just fine.

regards
Tapani
