NASCAR vs Indycar

by Dark Hor » Sun, 17 Sep 1995 04:00:00

I have both NASCAR and Indycar which are from Papirus. I enjoy both sims completely!

My question is: Why does Indycar run soo much smoother thant NASCAR? In Indycar,
I run 30 cars on the track with 90% graphics turned on and the frame rate is
flawless. In Nascar, if I get more than 5 cars with 50% graphics turned on it is
still choppy. Does anyone else experience this? Do you know if Papirus changed
graphics engines (for some unknown reason)????

Just curious. I enjoy NASCAR more than Indycar, so I'd like it to run smoother at
100% graphics.

        Thanks!

Without knowing more about your setup, I can think of a couple of reasons:

1) IndyCars have simpler models than NASCARs. The IndyCars in IndyCar
racing were comprised of about 220 polygons each, and many of those were
not texture mapped. The NASCARs in NASCAR Racing are comprised of about
280 polygons each, nearly all of which are texture mapped.

2) NASCAR supports SVGA. If you are running NASCAR -H to get high
resolution, you are pushing 4 times as many pixels to the screen as
IndyCar.

3) IndyCar used FM sound, while NASCAR uses digital sound. FM sound can be
handled nearly entirely on the sound card. For digital sound we use the
HMI sound drivers for DOS/4GW, which work well, but consume CPU. Try
turning down the number of opponents heard and see if your frame rate
improves.

If you still have problems, try contacting our technical support
department and see if they can help you.
